Sneaking A Peek At My
Friend's Unfinished Poem

He's gone for the holiday and I'm not, sort-of.
It looks as if he's here though,
Office door full open, bright, that coffee cup
Perched on the edge of things like always,
Like he's only stepped away
And he'll be back here any second to finish --
What is that on his paper holder, anyway?
Short lines, all spaced in little blocks, a title....
Could it be a poem? Was he writing or rewriting
Something at the end of yesterday? Something that
He'll send me later when it's crisp and clean and perfect,
All the lines just so, the punctuation clear,
The imagery a scintillating picture show?

And what do you look like now, I ask,
Halfway across the room.
"A recipe for pumpkin butter," it replies.

Who says a recipe
can't be food
for a poem?

Not I.

I'm glad you found this -- I was afraid my holiday poem would go unnoticed today because I didn't give it a holiday title....

The poet in question is my friend Pat -- Owlpoet to us here.....and I've sampled his pumpkin butter, though with not quite the same relish that I sample his poetry!

I'm sure he still has it -- he did have it taped to the wall, with this poem beside it!

And a "poem" that wasn't becomes a poem for another poet. *G* Thank you for this holiday treat, my friend! *S*

And I'm greedy. *G* I want both the pumpkin butter AND poems... and as long as I'm making my wish list, make that both yours and Pat's! *G*

I took a little break from my dusting and scrubbing for a read. (Remind me again why I looked forward to this day off from work...LOL) This write hit the spot and gave me a good chuckle, something I needed today!

Thanks, Ed!

Very nice, Ed...

and, I'm quite sure if you look close enough, you'll be able to find at least a couple of words on that recipe to rhyme when you're forced to post it here! LOL
