The King Is In His Counting House.... |

Wave's, the frost tanned flags That forms a tasseled dress: Pointed leaf-tips, waving south, The wind from northward strays; This cold November day.... * By some chance a corn seed fell here Far outside appointed furrow, Center field, inside a castle ruins; Built with stones that cleared the plowman's way. * Out of reach of reaper jaws, When the green deer slashed your kin To fragrant-fodder, at the start of fall, And ground up any future promise Of corn-grain sons, and daughters... Their germ and yellow coats Now sweet fermenting, high In concrete, silo towers. * Chance allowed your stalk to stand, here out of reach But nature hates a waste, and taxes every niche And so it makes, cobs as precious as is gold: Beneath the castle rocks, piled high Within his counting house, counting yellow stones; The king..... a tiny field-mouse, grins. |

The largess of nature is never to be confused with the greed of a mouse. Smiling at you...for very clever is your mind. |

ice...This poem is very special. It reminded me of a sunflower that grew from the crease in our brokendown hot tub and made me smile. This poem made me smile too. Thank you for that. |
