Note to readers:  The other night I became very curious about a comment, "your lol cracks me up."  Next I noticed postings of lol, ROTFWL, RWL and the sort at the beginnings of posts and really did not understand the meaning.  I had always posted lol at the end of something thinking I was saying "lots of love."  My 14-year-old corrected me, explaining that "things aren't the same now as when you were young!"  And so, I have apologies to make -- blame it on the generation gap and my lack of web chatting experience!!!

OOPS, BIG BOO BOO ! ! !

as a novice i began posting poetry on a whim,
enjoying reading and sweet replies,
and sometimes wondering with my eyes,
when i'd read LOL near front of lines.

i had always thought it meant
lots of love to a friend --
LOL the acronym -- I was real sure.
But one night I saw more.
Didn't know what ROTFWL stood for.

so i questioned my computer whiz,
"explain to me what LOL is?"
Response by him was like a wack
and really set my ego back --
then we had a ROTF laugh!

"mom," he said, "you're getting old!
LOL, mom, i could have told
means Laughing Out Loud;
you really blew it with those folks you're after;
all your Love notes really meant Laughter!"

"oh no," i screached, "what an error!"
"this is awful, my gosh, oh terror!"
LOL many times I'd written,
apparently I need be forgiven.

so i'm writing now for sorry's sake
because I made a grave misstake.
when i really meant Lots Of Love to you
i probably broke a heart or two.

forgive me if i'm out of step.
the times and years've upon me crept.
now i see that all things change.
in future times, i shall refrain
from Laughing Out Loud in all the wrong places.

Nice little poem,
And is something I can understand.
The shortening of the language for the sake of speed
Is not something I care for aiding,
Unless we all want to become eecummings style poets.
Call it resistance to change
I would like to believe it a stable language
But realize it isn’t.

This is soooooooo cute ... and having just received an email from an overseas friend, asking me to help her understand the shortcuts of the Internet language, I shall send her this link.
She will simply ROTFWL (roll on the floor with laughter)

iliana, I understand this completely. I have no idea what some people are saying with their little sayings. In fact, I thought that LOL meant Lots Of Laughter. Now, I find out that when I think I'm saying Lots Of Laughter, I'm really saying Laughing Out Loud? ahahahahaha!!  I can only imagine what somepeople think when I put that in a post. PIP was the first on-line community that I had ever posted on too.

So, does ROFL really mean "Rolling On Floor Laughing"??
ahahahahha

By the way, thanks for all the "Lots Of Love" that you put on my poems.
Hugs

It doesn't mean living out loud Ilana? This is a good write, how ingenious you are to set it to poem. Not an easy task but it was brilliant of you and very enjoyable!!!

Is there a book or site that defines these?  I'm glad you brought this to attention.  I don't think you are alone in your previous understanding, as I have seen others use LOL in such a manner.  Perhaps it would be nice a progressive dictionary here for people to add onto as the language changes so that we can use it as reference
