He walks down the street, Feeling quite uneasy. Afraid of the names He might be called, Has to hear them everyday. Wonders when The harsh words Will be no more, The day that he Can walk through, His front door, And feel like a human-being. |

This breaks my heart, to imagine someone so uncomfortable in their own skin, that they have yet to feel human. My oldest son is just entering the "tween" years (not quite a teen), and all the controversial emotions are beginning to shows signs of their coming. Your poem reminded me of how cruel some kids (& adults, too) can be. ~McLean |
