Bring back the Jackie Gleason shows
That made me laugh with wild delight
Until I had a runny nose.
Bring back the Jackie Gleason shows.

They were just ordinary joes
But Ralph and Norton were a sight!
Bring back the Jackie Gleason shows
That made me laugh with wild delight.

Bring back the funny Bob Hope shows
Wherever men were sent to fight.
He traveled with the USO's
Bring back the funny Bob Hope shows.

While soldiers fought against our foes
He offered them a brief respite.
Bring back those funny Bob Hope Shows
Wherever men were sent to fight.

Bring back those great Jack Benny shows
That used to fill my Friday night.
Chin held by hand in classic pose
Bring back those great Jack Benny shows.

As everyone who watched him knows
His fiddle playing was a fright!
Bring back those great Jack Benny shows
That used to fill my Friday night.

The tides of Life have ebbs and flows
That bring the dark where once was light.
Joy comes to life and then it goes.
The tides of Life have ebbs and flows.

These three now share deserved repose
Forever young in Heaven's sight.
The tides of Life have ebbs and flows
That bring the dark where once was light.

In my mind admiration grows
For these three stars that shone so bright
Until the final curtain close
In my mind admiration grows.

I thank them for their silly prose
And bid the three a fond goodnight.
In my mind admiration grows
For these three stars that shone so bright.

Jack, Jackie and Bob...

Two of the three are my parents' names...
you wouldn't know that...
but they watched the other....
that, you might know.

How special this is....

Balladeer
You must have gotten rained out at golf and written this waiting for the rain to stop.
Never the less I agree. Well done.

Balladeer -- I wish, I wish (there were more shows like this nowadays).  Thanks for the memories, yes, pun intended.

Hey! I thought you were suffering writer's block. If this is block I should watch  out (or give up) when you become unblocked.

Here in the midst of my lonely abyss, a single joy I find...your presence in my mind.  Unknown

I wonder how many of your readers really know much about these men and appreciate how talented they really were. They are legends....and this piece is a great tribute to them. FANTASTIC!

Michael, not only have you written these three fine gentlemen a wonderfully warm tribute, but you have done so expertly in form and flow!

This was beautifully rendered my 'Deer!  For such a structured form, you've made it flow fluidly and seemlessly.  Exquisite writing! A wonderful read!

Best wishes and hugs,
/Kit

Deer may we add dear ole Red and Uncle Milty.
I loved their shows and lets add a girl here and there. Carol and Lucy come to mind.
Good clean fun and laughter.
This was a delight to read.

I think I'll leave the triolets to you, 'Deer.  I struggle to just write poor poetry, forget the form!

Interesting format. You did in deed do it well (at least i assume you did it well... don't know the form, but do know what sounds good).

of course i don't remember watching these when they first appeared, but have watched several (many) over the years on reruns. not much of a fan for modern day variety shows, but those (among a few others of "that" time) were invariably entertaining.

likin' it. style is interesting as is the subject.

you know, i bet you can find most of these on dvd...

My thanks to you all! It's nice to rev up the old memory banks once in a while, ain't it?

Mysteria, give my love to the ladies

Christopher, I have to say I'm not a strong lover of that style, either. Although I lean toward structured form, when the style is so restrictive that it replaces the meaning of the words in favor of maintaining structure, I don't care for it.

As far as the content is concerned, I'm glad that I was a youngster when this type of show was prevalent...these three along with Red Skelton, Milton Berle and a few others. We don't have that type of variety show today, perhaps because we don't have comedians strong enough to pull it off. It took a very special talent to carry an entire show with skits and comedy routines the way Gleason and Skelton did, with Freddie the Freeloader, Clem Cadidlehopper, the lost soul and the bartender Gleason portrayed. The last type of this show I recall was Carol Burnett. Now we have sit-coms and Survivors. Such is progress. Yes, they do still survive on tapes and DVD's...I have them Thanks for your comments...

As I read the excellent poem, I was asking the same question you address in your response... where are today's lasting memories, classics that will endure?

You've captured 3 legends beautifully. *S*

’Deer dearest heart on one of my rare and infrequent visits I caught this gem, and although of course I will catch it in the archives, where life is slower much like me, I simply had to post a reply. A Troilet, they are obviously a form a simple soul like I am can’t manage. (Perhaps I could if I had unlimited time, but even then I’d need some ability and everyone knows, and me most of all I haven’t got any) No I leave the hard stuff to a master such as you and I’ll simply enjoy the result.

Brilliant piece of writing, not that I’ve seen that many of any of Jack, Jackie or Benny programs, but I do know they were considered the crème d’la crème, actually rather like you, they, like you, were masters of their art.

Anyway bravo m’sieur tu e’st magnifique, and this is outstandingly well written

Love and warm stuff

Brings back old memories and lots of smiling and you did a marvellous job on the triolet.

Even this Dutchie has seen some of those shows, way back, when I was still a young Dutchie.

So glad to see you posting again my friend, I've missed you.
