This early morning breeze stirs memories
of harbor days,
the old ways of settling a score,
neon coffee diners
greasy eggs for energy,
spending half the night just for fun
rousting amateurs chasing dreams
with fakes I.D. and somebody's borrowed car,
never let it go too far
just sent them home broke and scared
to finish growing up.

This coffee's fresh
and doesn't stink of last night's trash;
I wake up these days still holding cash
and I lose track too easily
of the pedigree of each and every scar;
they're mostly gone you know,
on my kind of skin
they only show until the healing's done,
though looking close
you can still see the lines,
fine white threaded lace designs,
I wonder why my heart won't heal that well.

My favorite things
aren't always what they used to be,
I've learned to appreciate being free;
oh, I still live outside the law,
but now I'm honest.
The sun comes up late these days,
I'll wait for it here today
there's little else to do for men my age.

Another cup with Coltrane please,
no, there's nothing wrong
I'll sip my coffee in this early breeze;
I won't sleep anyway
and I'll think of all the pretty women I have known;
sometimes I think it's good they're gone
now they haven't aged a day
and it's more polite to think of them that way;
oh, I don't miss being young,
I just like thinking of them way back when
my mornings often started at sundown,
then I'd rise to be the baddest man in town
and sometimes days would seem as if
they were a lifetime long.

How I wandered through the years to now
simply puzzles me even more
than how I managed to survive the life I lived,
but I'll sip my coffee quietly,
the music's good,
the breeze is free,
and John sounds the same
as back when we were young.

Boy you hit a bittersweet target with this one actually, and I wanted to respond to it although I too still find the music great, and the coffee's actually better, but...

and I'll think of all the pretty women I have known;
sometimes I think it's good they're gone
now they haven't aged a day

As one of those ladies from back then I actually think I like the idea of someone sitting somewhere remembering me the way I was, and yes it is polite, very!

I too find the days a lifetime long sometimes, but I think I am grateful for that in fact.

I truly enjoyed this, and I mean it!  Thanks for the memories, and it sure is nice to know I am not alone in having these kinds of memories.  Happy New Year to you!

Oh, my goodness! I am tucking this one into my library to read to my hubby this evening. Sounds like his "former" life, with some subtle changes. He tells his stories over and over to me....no...I never get tired of hearing them, nor his Neil Young music. Really enjoyed this icebox, thankyou. hugs, Chris

I think you learned some survival skills along the way.  Hugs!
