I remember when . . .
we used to spend two weeks
up at Black Lake every summer

my parents and I rented a cabin
next door to my grandparents
with my aunt and uncle on the other side

my cousins and I played volleyball
on the beach in the warm sand
while our parents and grandparents watched

my cousin and I would go fishing
with my dad or my uncle each day
until we were old enough to go ourselves

we'd all get together and have a barbeque
or a bonfire at dusk on the beach
just enjoying each other's company

sometimes we'd go to my aunt and uncle's cabin
with friends from up and down the beach
for a sing along while my uncle played his guitar

these scenes play in my mind today
the pictures are as clear as they were years ago
as I reflect upon the past knowing the future

I remember when . . .
life life was fun and carefree
when we lived and laughed together

This poem is dedicated to my Uncle Lee, who is in the hospital dying of cancer. It has spread to his kidneys, lungs, and back. There is nothing more they can do for him now except make him as comfortable as possible. Uncle Lee, thanks for the great memories. I will never forget them or your wry sense of humor.

funny to read this enjoyable piece tonight.

My wife and I were sitting after dinner saying --- remember when - - - we were young and our relatives would all crash after eating and we wanted to do nothing but run and play and have fun, not SLEEP!, but they wanted to ... crash and burn.  It was always so boring!  And now, gee whiz, I think the tables are turning...

I am sorry about your Uncle. You honor him well by caring so much for him as shown through your writings. I'm sure he thinks the same of his nephew. You write with strength through your love for him. God Bless you.

I know the feeling Jennifer, though my sister isn't into that stage yet (it will be the next stage)...and we are making all the "now" memories we can together.

Hoping you can have some peace and happiness throughout this next year.
