The First Tangerines… In my own early years of Christmases, the ones of first remember, stockings held nuts, and candies, oranges and one small, special gift. A nutcracker would be brought out, with great celebration, ready to release the fruits of walnuts, or Brazil nuts, almonds and such, while wrapped candies, like toffies and nougats, golden and rainbowed colors, awaited a certain type of melting… then one year, in the early years of my knowing, a special fruit appeared, small and gold, round and sized to fit in a child’s hand, even a small child’s hand, with a loose skin, not like a succulent orange, and seemingly a little redder than the common fruit of California… as if it had been greeted with a compliment, and had blushed, readily… the first tangerines of knowledge were held in a Christmas stocking, and we were instructed, gently, on how to peel and amazed, in the inspection of its looseness, its ready gentility to be tasted… with an admonition to watch for the seeds. I never knew a reddish gold fruit could juice so well, or taste so good. The first tangerines remain a desire that only a memory of youth might recall. The one small gift … I work hard to remember what it was, exactly. |

In my own early years of Christmases, the ones of first remember, stockings held nuts, and candies, oranges and one small, special gift. How did you know that was my stocking? It included a yearly flashlight and a folding comb! Great memories you brought back! Thank you, Sunshine! Oh, Yes--thanks for playing the Minute Rhyme! Sadelite |

Sweet Sunshine, you are a master at evoking memories: "the first tangerines of knowledge were held in a Christmas stocking, and we were instructed, gently, on how to peel and amazed, in the inspection of its looseness, its ready gentility to be tasted… lol [This message has been edited by iliana (12-20-2003 04:50 PM).] |

I am saving this one for Christmas morning. This year I am going to help Santa with the girls' stockings by including a tangerine in both. Then after the gifts are opened, I will read this delightful memory to Chelsea and Macy. Hmmm...You may of started a tradition in my home. Can you tell I love this? Patricia |

And....if I were a betting man. I would bet that all of your stockings contain at least one of these little delightful fruits... Eh? Beautiful poem, laced with memories of my own remembers. |

(smiles) Oh Karilea, I love tangerines, sweet friend, they are better than oranges I think and have such a flavor that is much more diverse than most fruits to my tongue! (big angel hugs) God Bless You, sweet friend, let's see what Saint Nick puts in your stocking this time, maybe a rare Amazonian fruit, yay, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Karilea, thank you for sharing! May love and light always shine upon you! Love, Noah Eaton "You'll find something that's enough to keep you |
