No coins in my pouch This Christmas Day, No comfortable couch, Nor instrument to play, No well-prepared feast, No mutton or rum, Nor food fit for beast, No puddings or plums, No boxes wrapped neatly In foil, paper or lace, The only thing mine solely The dirt on my face. Would you pass me by, In your bustle and haste? Shake your head with a sigh And deny me a taste? Would you quickly step round me On your way in from the cold As darkness surrounds me? Could you be so bold? Remember me, oh Christmas, Fell by need into shame. I remember you, Christmas. I once had a name. I ask not for a mansion, Nor gold from above, Just for some compassion, Kindness and love. Do not deny me Or others in need While you rush home from shopping Your families to feed. Remember me, Christmas As I remember thee, Compassion for Christmas Is my only plea. -- Remembering those less fortunate during our holiday of "giving". |
