Sitting, waiting for the train, great iron snake sliding past to take you away from me again, calmly we commented on the weather, serenely you smoked your cigarette; I wondered, were you still wet from sweat that passion steals, or did some part of you fear that this was real; could you feel my heart shaking in my chest as I watched you leave? I had promised both of us there would be no tears, not a hard promise to keep, the pain went way beyond simple tears on ashen cheek, after all what was I seeing but the sum of all my greatest fears. You had weighed your choices; I can not even challenge them. We both know obligations bitter spice; each avowed to bring no harm to others needlessly, honor bound in webs of karma, I wondered if my anguish showed as plainly as it felt inside; though you were leaving, neither of us lied about the tangled webs of life. You said I simply draw others to me like I am an old road that welcomes travelers by making choices easy; you said you keep men inside your heart, as a collection of stories, promises and broken dreams. It seems maybe you are right; maybe I should rage against my life the way I used to strike out at anyone or anything that dared standing in my way, but I am not the same man today as when I held the lives of others, carelessly, to toss away like beads at Mardi Gras. So slowly I will push my world and it will change, or I will die, I have no way to know if I will live to change it all, and if I do will you be standing with me, again, on some soft Autumn night saying hello or goodbye in this or in some other life? Is that the price of knowing, of understanding how the threads are woven in the tapestries of souls? It is perhaps a weakness but I must believe, watching stars that never leave, we will know truly unto life we have been right. ©2003 by icebox |

*smile* Well, a simple "hello" is enough for me. Thank you for reading. |

This speaks an anguish I know daily, choices I make, daily. I know this poem by heart, without reading a word of it. I'm sorry that you do too, but I'm glad you express it so well. |
