The Shadow of Yesterday

Hidden in the shadows of Egg McMuffins and Biggy Fries are the
shadows of yesterday.
Hidden in these yesteryear shadows are the pioneers of old.
Eating at a campfire, hot biscuits, beans in an old iron skillet.
Coffee being strained over and over until it has the look of light muddy water.

Instead of a luxury automobile, maybe just a horse and saddle
with a poncho and a hat pulled down tight.
These worn and tattered clothes
protecting their tired bodies from the rains or the heavy snows
or the scorching heat from a desert.
A desert that has swirling cutting sands and will not show mercy to man or to beast.

No modern hotel when they come to a small solitary town.
No running water, no warm bath and soft fluffy towels to wrap their bodies that are worn out from the hundreds of miles they have traveled.
No soft featherbed to lull them to sleep
Only a bed made of straw with blankets as soft as
the wool of steel.

But, if our pioneer of old goes to the old saloon for a bite to eat.
He may happen across a visionary
A man who loves to cook
Today this man has an idea, a visionary is he.
Today he will make biscuits like a sandwich.
In this biscuit he will put an egg, a pile of bacon, a slice of cheese
and
he will call it an egg-bacon-cheese muffin.
With this muffin he will fry huge skillet potato fries.
Then just like the big cities do
A large coldjug of sarsaparilla to finish the meal.
Someday this visionary is going to start a restaurant of his own and he will
call it
Donald’s.

Love Bon-Bon
