My hand yearns to feel the flowing balance of the axe, to spin within the circle luminescent in the dance of death; My spirit lusts across the ages in the timeless ache that finds release only in the blinding surge of war. You say you will not join with me this one more time, to build again the righteous horror in its greatest form, to feel the shudder and the bight, whether victory or defeat we've shared it all countless times across the centuries. Why hold back now when we have learned tomorrow's truth? When opportunities arise anew without fail or animosity, lives are simple dancing heads of wheat swelling in the sun awaiting patiently the harvest and the justice of the blade. I know I'll tire once again of the slaughter toward the end and long for times of peace, another life of blessed anonymity, just as I know some life I will be done, truly done, and the lust for battle bloody vengeance mindless retribution will be gone. I know as much of who I've been, why and what its cost, I know there's more, the passion's heat will not be denied; comrade, brother, we marched rode sailed crawled when needed, into the mischief we traced life's patterns freely in our crimes on all the sands, through conscience littered corridors of time. Can you now withdraw to wait, indulging me until I'm done, as if I am a child stubbornly delaying dinner for the family while I'm playing selfishly with hedonistic toys of youth? ©2003 by icebox (written April,1975) |

But son of Odin, remember the warning given to your father... * "No knowledge can save you, And no magic will save you. For you will end up in Fenrir's belly, While heaven and earth will burn in Surt's unholy fire." * – Doom of Odin, from the Book of Heroes. I believe this says that it might be wise to lay down your axe... A most enjoyable read.....ice |

WIDE SMILE. oh thank you... I'm keeping this one for my son. On a school form that asked him his religios preference (baffles me AND him why public schools would ask this) he boldly printed, "Odinist". chuckle and oh yeah to the poem, the last stanza especially hit home (as well it should) Hugs ice. Indulge?!?! there is no safe distance, no safe refuge when a child swings an axe. I love this poem for the vivid picture it painted. I look forward to reading more of your work. Sherry |
