![]() Picture by Josephine Wall * * * I wrote this prior to recently becoming a volunteer where I visit an elderly person in their home and spend a few hours with them each week. A couple of months after this was written I was matched up with an 83 year old lady named Merle who I have been visiting every Friday for the past month. I find my volunteer work so very rewarding and I hope to do more in the future. This was written purely from my imagination. * * * I tried to step inside her shoes And walk around for awhile Her eyes seemed sad and distant And her face contained no smile She looked so lost and lonely In desperate need of a friend Had her heart been broken And would it ever mend? I sat quietly down beside her And I greeted her with a smile I thought I'd keep her company And stay for just awhile We talked about so many things About her life in days gone by As she searched inside her memory I saw a tear escape her eye Her face began to change As she opened up to me Her tales were so uplifting She seemed so alive and free We talked for what seemed hours For much longer than awhile But it was worth every single minute To see the joy within her smile * * * "Love is the greatest of all cures - not least for loneliness Finding a cause or purpose beyond ourselves gives us a vital sense that life is worth living - Whatever our personal circumstances, and whether or not we have someone to come home to" I am in motion |

Suetang, I have to agree with Noah here. You do have a beautiful heart. If you had not told us this was a made up poem I would have thought it a lovely dedication to the elderly lady with whom you volunteer. Have you shown her this lovely poem? I'm betting she would enjoy reading it. Dawn |

I have always impressed upon my daughters to make a difference and that they should leave this world a better place than the one they were born into ~ and you, Dear Sue, are doing just that!--making a difference! The world will is a better place because you're in it! ![]() ![]() Linda |

Sue: Lovely poem! So good of you to visit Merle every week. It is very rewarding I know. My son and I have been visiting a shut-in neighbor for the past four years, every Thursday morning. I think we get more from the visits than she does! Love Betty Lou Betty Lou Hebert |

Thank you all for your wonderful comments. I have always felt so comfortable in the company of people much older than myself and feel they have so much to give. I just wish I had been able to do this long ago. Dawn - Yes, I did show the poem to Merle and she really liked it. I found out on my first visit that she liked reading poetry, before I told her that I write. Take care......Sue I am in motion |

Sue, so much gratifying work can be done with our senior citizens across the world. So many have few relatives that continue to put quality time with them first....Our own lives cause rifts in this area.....the ages of many who would visit lend to the loneliness and isolation.... As I once said, behind the eyes of every elderly person is the vision of a child that is lonely and wants to come out and play....the eyes never age, just the body around them... Thanx for sharing your happiness with us. Hopefully it will become contagious... Barry |

Suetang - you're very special to do something like this. To have someone like this lady smile is a very nice reward... BC |

Oh what a beautiful poem and picture. And yes, love is the greatest. It is indeed a very rewarding thing to do. I work with the elderly, myself. |
