Steel wheels, Iron rails... A passing thought as the ribbon stretched through countless miles of scrub brush, cacti and tumbleweeds. A thousand miles of nowhere, reflecting of another time as the gentle sway of the Iron Horse lulled me into that mental time machine of day dreams. Count the ties, feel the click of rail, smell the coal fires burning as the chugg, chugg gave the gut the feel of power. That red caboose dragging far behind, where coffee brewed slowly over the potbellied stove. A cup....laced tenderly with sugar and the following sip and ahhhh meant that heaven was there upon that steel rail....as a thousand miles of nowhere drifted into memories and dreams. The startling darkness of the unsuspected tunnel, where sounds grew fearsomely loud...and the breath was held until the tunnel end again shone the light. Imagine the days, where deer and antelope played the range and a nickel bought a buck’s worth of anything... Were those guys on horses just cowboys or....were their bandanas around their necks today? A thousand miles of heaven’s rail as the slow sip brings yet another “Ahhhhh”....... |
