Go On [Konrad’s Times] The finger of a life-force in wan stroked the back of his neck, and Konrad turned to face northward, standing tall, then, uncontrollably, shivered. Blood drained from his face, and he knew. Dana was in their small cabana on the beach, drying off from their recent swim as a dark-skinned man came racing across the sands yelling, Senor! Senor! waving a boldly yellow envelope that even Konrad recognized. Wordlessly, he took the telegram from the native, then turned his back and faced a blue-green ocean, sitting down in the sand. He fingered it for a few minutes as he felt the knowledge well in him, damning the force that made him erudite before the telling. He could hear her quivering voice of Dillon’s having to speak the words contained within to a stranger over the phone. “Iambe gone. Stop. Funeral in two days. Stop. Come home. Stop. Dillon” The date of the ’gram was three days ago. Konrad heaved a weighty sigh. He could already hear Jake’s tone and feel Dillon’s shuddering cries. His hand played in the white sand, feeling the granules as if he had never felt sand before, rolling them between his thumb, and fingers, making boulders out of grief. Dana, his chocolate latte woman, emerged from the cabana, and started towards him. Konrad stood, and held up his hand. She stopped, and he could see, even from a distance, that she could recognize the yellow paper in his hand. She turned around, and he watched as she went back inside, knowing she would have started packing but now unsure if she would come with him. and if not, he would wish her Godspeed, and to go on with her life, while he went on with his. ~*~ Sadly…inspired by Cpat Hair’s /pip/Forum55/HTML/000708.html [This message has been edited by Sunshine (09-26-2003 07:44 PM).] |

"She turned around, and went back inside, knowing she would have started packing but unsure if she would come with him. and if not, he would wish her Godspeed, and to go on with her life, while he went on with his." I'm still in the denial phase. Damn him anyway. "His hand played in the white sand, feeling the granules as if he had never felt sand before, rolling them between his thumb, and fingers, making boulders out of grief." Don't think I've ever 'sighed' in a response on here.... First time for everything, I guess. *Not quite resigned sigh* You handled this beautifully Kari. Almost made it a bit easier to swallow. I think years from now, I will remember where I was, when I heard the news.... |

...but I still think you should continue it... man, it's dreary outside and looks like rain. Good reading because it's awesome writing. "Vision without action is a daydream. Action without vision is a nightmare." -Japanese Proverb |
