Fall of ‘89 Warm, as the winds blew from seaward toward the hills. Life filled with hustle and bustle as a great storm looms on our horizon. Oh how frightened you would have been, had you been here. Unknown, lying there in your mother’s womb, quiet to the world. Only the skip of a maternal heart telling you to rest, lie quietly...as time carried us all into the eye of a hurricane. You never saw the bowing trees, the skyline that blackened ominously as trees fell, power lines severed and countless deadly snakes arced and sparked the roadways. Lying there in that protective liquid, you were impervious to what went on around you... You might have noticed how you were jostled from time to time, with all of the debris that your mother helped move, with the darkness of eve as temperatures slowly dropped to almost bearable. Had you been there, you would have found sanctuary, for in my arms, gentle arms you would have slept quietly. Freckles had not yet adorned your handsome face, only the soft smile of tiny lips...hungry lips that sometimes cried...wanting to be fed. You would have found great love, even during moments of trial and uncertainty. As we scurried to clear the roads, find ice to chill our foods....make a fire to warm our hands and cook countless meals as we all waited patiently for someone to say “Let there be light”....eventually there was... Yes, Fall of 89, when you were conceived, may your life continue to grow....keeping an eye to the east, watching for yet another storm....as a breeze softly caresses your freckled face, blowing your reddish brown hair....and so reminding me of that warm Autumn day.... I love you Timothy...we all do. |

I'm glad, for Tim's sake, you two reached for each other... |

Aah, how I remember that fall. Hurricane Hugo. My children weren't born then, not til many years later, but I saved newspapers, pictures that I took of everything around Myrtle Beach, the lines, people, the destruction, and even pictures we took in Charleston. I figured my children would one day appreciate a picture of a huge boat in the middle of Highway 17. You did a wonderful job describing that event, and showing that with the devastation and destruction, life does go on, as it went on with your family. |

Oh Barry...you got the tears streaming. My baby girl is 13 today. And although hurricanes do not touch us here in Missouri, you reminded of the horrible car accident I had in my 7th month of pregnancy and the scare we had that I would lose her. But here she sits in her new birthday jeans (I don't know where she gets her love of shopping...LOL) asking me to get off the computer...not so that we can talk but so that she can talk to her friends on line. I better grant her birthday wish! Great writing, Barry. Patricia |

That was so beautiful. I was graduating college back then and was sure I would never have children. It's like I'm a whole different person now and I wouldn't give my boys up for anything, especially since I almost lost one. You write so well |
