~ We gather in this sacred place in nature’s livery to reconfirm our union in this silent reverie. We focus, before fire is lit, and contemplate within, our purpose for the sweat today before we can begin. These times we come to reconfirm our oneness with the elements, find harmony in timbre’s spirit, a healing in this presence, surrounded by sweet mother earth, her water, air and fire, we purify inside and out, declare through sweat and prayer. A fire is built and flames shoot high in revered dedication, our faces smudged with sage and soot in somber meditation. We must come here with stomachs bare; it is the sweat tradition, we gather poles and stones and wood, prepare for our transition. The hazel poles are bent in place, under cloth and canvas taut, and in the center lies a pit where hot stones will be brought. And as the stones are heated in the fire outside our tent, we initiate the ritual and discuss the sweat’s intent. We enter then in naught but skin, walk in a clockwise course, encircling the empty pit to seek our spiritual force. When all inside are sitting, the hot stones are then brought in and placed inside the waiting pit so that we can begin. We sit inside the darkness as the leader of the sweat dedicates our humble lodge to the elements and spirits that serve as the connection, in harmony well spent, animal, plant, mineral, our future, past, and present. A round of prayer begins then, either silent or out loud, as each round ends, we start again, each with new theme found. fresh water sprinkled on the rocks renews the steam inside, we then complete the final round, we rise and step outside. Our ritual, is over, our prayers have been expressed, We douse ourselves in water, complete the cleansing process. It matters not what spiritual path we chose while in that tent, for all use prayer to seek well being in body, mind, and spirit. ~ |

Glory, this is so well-written, that I felt I was inside the tent, too. Very good writing. Hugs Ethel |

(sigh) Alongside with God, my Cherokee ancestors also performed these rituals, and the sweat was like the pouring out of the anxieties and tears and being rejuvenated with spiritual awareness and strength!
