“She needn’t steal your heart if you give it to her the cops and robbers of your childhood neglected to teach you such simplicity” --Saul Williams “,Said the Shotgun to the Head” Ignored by those caught up in their affairs, his words of love now lower to a hum. The homeless prophet speaks of change to come that passersby can’t spare. O, John the Baptist of the present day, can’t you foresee your head upon a platter? The one you love will dance the night away and flirt with Herod over laid-back, easy chatter… You say her heart and yours will beat as one? Before the cock crows, she will prove you wrong. Your swan is but a duckling though among the others ducklings she appears a swan. You praise her grace as thought a poet might, compare her eyes to stars and polished gems, and you’re not frightened by the pitch-black night from which her beauty stems. O, hopeless lover, you are right, of course! You can foresee your fate... but you’re content. No greater is the sacrifice of man than this: to love, no matter at what cost... Now this is a thing of beauty. I love all the allusions you use here.... almost archetypical... losing one's head to a beauty that has... (I am assuming) not given you a single thought or backwards glance.... but just the same you are lost in her perfume, and chasing your own tail as it were. And yet it is better to love ... even if it is unrequited and unreturned..... Well done, Master Poet!!! Sherry PS. Come see mine... Follows your theme a bit
