The wind is cool this afternoon
reminding me of a December day when she left
rain hangs in the air waiting to fall
drowning sorrows in the clutter drains of streets
no Indian summer sun to brighten the colours of the leaves
as they gather in beds under a dying oak tree
no crisp crunch under our bodies only a damp wet feeling of loss
as I think of ten months of nothing from someone who meant everything
but is really nothing but a wasting thought of today
starved in the harvest of tomorrow and initialed in the bark of yesterday
it was more need than love
it is more love than need
that I need right now
as September turns into October.
