Time dashed the door on hurried wing
into the darkened chilling frost.
As warriors rode in cloak of night
to warn the realm of peril’s cost.

He bade farewell, a last goodbye,
a gentle kiss born of the eve.
She failed to see the welling tear
descending as he rode in grief.

From tethered lips and unfound words
upon their bed in hurried throes.
They loved as though to be their last
before the clash of dreaded foes.

Of finest stock and loyalty,
eight riders left the courtyard bare.
Toward the east, their destiny,
on but a wing and whispered prayer.

They knew their odds to be most great,
to fill the ground from arrow’s flight.
And from the stare of waiting fear
they cast their lot one moonless night.

When dawn does break the hanging dew
upon the vine of liberty.
Eight riders fight, these valiant few,
until their deaths, their destiny.

Though told with an archaic tone, and in romantic scenes, this is something that has happened throughout history, is happening now and will happen tomorrow, and it's far too real. Well done.

Thanx Nan,  thanx for the reminder that this
act of courage still goes on...as the words
fill this page,  there are those who are
giving their life for freedom...Living out
their destinies.  Saying tearful goodbyes
and taking lonely walks down darkened streets
to a place where they climb into their own
saddle...and bid farewell.

Yes,  this poem is about more than a moment
of centuries ago...for the only thing that
has changed is how to kill...

This is a destiny that I wish didn't have to happen, but for the cause it keeps us strong and free.

words of chivalry are always some of my favorite...
they ache so much though.
You write it well sir.

Mmm bravo Barry. Very well done. The rhyme scheme is wonderful. There is definitely a sing-song meter within the verses. I watch and unlock the secrets. (Keep them coming!)

In so few lines, you tell a great story... and make us care for the characters... This is excellent! *S*
