Survival of the Fittest

The fruit did not survive the rape;
The birds took every single grape.
It's not the birds, but I to blame;
God treats us all the very same.
He gave us all the ready sign;
The birds obeyed, I ignored mine.

I knew the ripening was due,
But days were busy, hours were few
For me to take my plucking shears
And pick the heavy laded spears.
I toyed with them, had a taste
And vowed that none would go to waste.

I waited for the sun to shine
When leisurely, I would pick mine
And then allow the birds the few
That for my purpose, would not do.
Those birds were much more sly than I.
They knew those grapes were for to die.

Now as I wipe away a tear,
"I will do better, come next year."

(sigh) Awwwwwwwww, but at least you knew and next year you will do just that and both you and the birds will win, yay! (kiss on cheek) God Bless You, sweet friend, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Joyce, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!

reminds me of the tortoise and the hare...

and then there was a story about a squirrel
who saved up all the acorns....

Yeah,  I have been down that same path a
few times...

Thanx for a wise and nicely written write.

The grapes of wrath, heh?
To not pick a bushel after all that work, and waiting so patiently!
Hope those ravens appreciated their feast.

Excellent example of responsibility learned and superbly penned. Can’t blame the natural order of things for our own neglect.

Thanks,   Melton

Wonderful poem! ~ but that must have been soooo disappointing not to have been able to collect the fruits of your labour!

~ Here's to you claiming your grape crop next year!

Lovin' hugs,
Linda
P.S. Remember that ye must reap thy crop lest it be raped!

Joyce,
I never know when my fruit is ripe until a blue bird makes a drill. LOL Enjoyed your poem.

Sighs...I am always late, to reap the benefits, I understand this one.

Ah this was a lesson to us all Joyce, that indeed the early bird does catch the worm.  I watched the squirrels eat all the hazelnuts of the tree here, LOL, so I know the pain of loosing this game too!  Those animals are smarter than we are - remember the story of the ants, and the grasshopper?  I tell that to the kids all the time to get them to pick up their toys, and if they don't hurry, I will give them to someone who will appreciate them (mean huh?)  Well, now we will both have to be a raven or a worm next year that is all there is too it.

Happy Harvest Next Year Joyce!

Isn't that the way?  Plucked too soon,
and the fruit just doesn't taste right;
wait for the moment, and bird of prey
have had their way...

I'll remind you next year, a day or so before the anniversary of this post!

Thanks everyone.  But in self defense the wind was horrendous for several days and then we had a flood and I had to evacuate.  The birds persevered.  Love, Joyce

Joyce:  Enjoyed your poem very much and do send it along to Gary Drury.  I think he'll enjoy it.  Reminds me of my own tardiness in gathering apples.  A bear got almost all of them, but perhaps it will give him a happy hibernation! I was waiting for them to turn a bit redder!
