Around a tea cup, crone hands wrap
To capture heat, before it leaves
And loses its economy;
Through cracked, yellow glaze.
*
Old bones, ache, weak in grip
Rubbing hands, to sooth
She cracks arthritic joints
Above the "bucket a day".
*
Inside the stove, is what remains
Of ancient ferns, now turned,
Black-stones.Their baking glows
The exit pipe,cherry-ripe...
She warms by moving close
To once again, last summer
Spreading from the blaze.
*
A turn of the crank
Shakes the grates
Sleeping things
Come awake, in the glow
And a rush of air
Ignites bright flames
That leap above the smolder;
Like smelling-salts, these poems
Revive, make come alive, her history.
Some bright, and some dark lines
With little redundancy.
*
The old stove speaks
Of red's, and of green's,
Of orange's, whites
Topped by blue dancers,
The fire recites
Songs from past days,
Of hate or romancing;
Performed on a pig-iron stage...
*
Out of the fire,
(though she deaf by age)
Some age-old bard repeats
The lines of her life's poems;
Some that bring tears
(And some that bring cheer)
Some recalling
Happiness,
Some recalling rage.
*
Reaching for the globe....
A turn of the key,
Makes the trimmed-wick flicker,
Changing the rooms sad-grey
Into sulphur-
yellow light; it is always then
That he is most remembered..
*
But he is earth dead,
And in heaven, her man abides..so,
Towards an empty bed she goes
Up the stair-well, lamp extended.

a very enjoyable read, ice

loved the imagery, could see and hear the crackle of love's embers re-igniting within her mind
