mowed the lawn trimmed the hedges a glass of iced tea on the porch steps in the shade, my neighbors cat rubbing against my back and nudging its damp nose into the side of my sweaty arm, know that if I pet her then touch my face my eyes will go bloodshot, pet her anyway and reflect upon all the meditation during the yard work, about the poem I wanted to write, mans’ persistence in relation to the persistence of a tree, the body’s will over the mind, how although one can choose to starve the body, the body will refuse to starve, feed upon itself and in the same manner a tree will cut the nutrients off to a limb in time of drought or drop its leaves before winter and again mankind in excess, greed and gluttony, I imagine the orchard from my youth, the apple, pear, peach trees with too much fruit among the limbs, how the fruit remained un-ripe, the limbs sagged, broke, and the harvest was poor we succeed to suffer, return to the same fetal position, I knew a woman who spoke to the shadows in the park threw bread to the ducks and gathered odd shaped stones from the river, brown hair, brown eyes, rarely smiled, wore hats and scarves in summer, picked flowers from my neighbors garden while they were on vacation, never knew her name but smiled when she passed me down the road an orange sky, setting sun, distant clouds, breeze from the southeast, traffic of Rt. 517, of Rt. 206, robins in the yard, ants on the steps, smell of barbeque in the air, wet spot around my glass the cat at my side stretches her haunches and claws at my shorts with her front paws,I scratch between her ears, she pushes her mouth into my hand and bites me lightly on the palm. a yard's work; a mind's ramble... both, ready for more seed. Well done, Sir! |
