What music too,
Dance these reapers?
Black-gown, white-bonnet
Illusions, in August
Bobbing
Like bobolinks,
Rising then falling
Back to the sheaves.
Each waist, bending
Many hands binding,
Women and children
Stacking stooks,
With string-cut hands.
*
Ahead, the men
Keep perfect time
Rocking cradles,
Swinging steel.
Scythes and human voices singing
Songs of joy of living,
Slicing oats
Ground-low, as 'cross
The field in ancient rhythm,
Urged on forward by the rhyming...
To light within, they offer prayer
Of thanks for work,
And a yield that's fair.
*
In a mirage I see them
Alive in wave's of heat and dust
A human oasis,
Married to their task's
Each to each-other
All of the many as one,
Grouped by works integrity
Joining in toils necessity.
Wives and husbands
Aunts and uncles,
Friends and neighbors...
Sisters
Brothers,
Cousins.
*
Loud sound!
The daydream breaks
I am stirred awake,
By what is real.
Dark truths
Have frightened the reapers,
Scatted all phantasms
And as I morn their loss, a demon
Across, the field
I see, approaching...
The one that came to take
All gentle spirits from this place;
That now lay trampled,
Spirits broken
By this beast.
*
Bankers gold can be exchanged
For different metal,
That can divide men from their familials.
*
Slight clearing of the din and clamor
Reveals the monster's,
Human drover.
Alone, a man at harvest
Swings the beast,
Goes back along straight lines;
Moving fast, but song-less
Stirring dust-clouds higher.
*
Shrouded in a witches brew
Of poison smoke, the diesel
Slave is chained to seat.
Steering mute, makes better time
When guiding steel that's breathless;
But I fear the loss of human voice,
Above the belch of fire.
