Death Is the Great Equalizer Harsh, infertile, gray-barked hardwoods line the boulevard like dead sentinels. Gone is the remembrance of burgeoning growth from their branches, for the tree sap which gives life has ceased to flow. I feel melancholy inside as I thrust beneath their dreary presence. It's as if I am trapped within a necropolis that stretches as far as the eye can see. Even the upper atmosphere seems to have forgotten the intensity of blue. Ashen clouds, from out of the tundra areas, have brought with them an inhospitable wintry wind. The world has been draped in a burial cloth of purest snow-white. This beggarly imagery is disconcerting to my mind. I feel empty and singular. 'Tis into some lesser-traveled lane I turn, and willfully I drudge onward. Alas I hunger for the remembered touch of the sun upon my shoulders. Wherefore hast thou gone my friend? An inconsequential breeze swirls a forgotten reddish-brown leaf into the air. I watch it intently as it capers haphazardly across a yard, before it is whisked away, aye never to been seen again. Permanence is momentary it seems. One instant we are bursting forth into this world in a brilliance of coloration and the next our deceased ruins are being snatched away as though they had never been. Yea winter has come again, not just for the world, but for my heart too. Each year at this time I feel the shadowy ache for my wife and daughter whom I lost, oh so long ago. Once, in ages gone-by, all of my days were springtime fresh, but I have learned that death is the great equalizer. No more will I know the enchantment of that first flourishing floweret of spring. My existence has become a glacial Sahara of frozen icepacks and snow, and my heart has been chilled by permafrost. Remember, if you're not part of the future, you're history! |

A hug from one to another. The poem is beautiful but sad too. ;-) |

A write very befitting of it's title. Well written, and a bit saddening to the eyes... |

"My existence has become a glacial Sahara of frozen icepacks and snow and my hear has been chilled by permafrost." Oh, your description so vivid. I wish I could say something of comfort. Sadelite |

beautifully written, and felt the same.....changing the world...one poem at a time, that's the stuff ![]() i think that it's brainless to assume that making changes to your window's view will gain a new perspective. |
