"I haev a deam today" I heard those words echo Across the land as I gazed Watching the motion in the Reflecting Pool The world was changing before my eyes. I felt the love the man had For himself, his G-d, for all men Fifty-Thousand people heard him preach For peace, and love, and hope By loving those who hate you back "We don't want a war today" I heard those words echo Across the crowd as I gazed Watching the protest in the Reflecting Pool America was changing before my eyes I felt the hatred the youth had For themselves and for their countrymen Fifty-Thousand people for them died No peace, or love, or hope By the country who they loved back "I have a deal today" I heard this mumbled Across the counter as I watched The garbage piling in the Reflecting Pool History had changed before my eyes I felt the greed the man had With all the product he sells Fifty-Thousand dollars made each year Not peace, or love, or hope For the men who never came back This was written in frustration after a visit to the Nations Capitol a while ago. At the base of the Lincoln Memorial, where two of the greatest event of American activism took place, is a group of merchants selling merchandise on the premise that it will bring the POW's home from VietNam. Not one could tell me how. We are all equal but we’re individually different |

Very moving, Bradly. Your epilogue reminded me of the "flag sellers" who popped up like mushrooms all over LA after 9/11 and the "war". It gave me so many mixed emotions it's hard to describe -- a sickening; a cynical smirk; a sense of humor; a nod towards "capitalism"; a deep sense of wrong, shame, hopelessness and ultimately, serenity. Seems "everything" has its price, metaphorically and literally. Well done. -MVS You CAN make a difference: |

This reminds me of the scene in the Bible when Jesus became righteously indignant when men were selling goats, and all sorts of animals for their sacrifices. They made the synogogue a place of money changers rather than the reverance it should have been. This made me think of that same feeling he felt in the Bible story. A place that was supposed to be for worship was tainted like this place you went to was tainted by merchandise. Thanks for sharing this!
