in the shadows

She told me I was crazy,
it was condescending
social patter
meant to shatter all illusions
I might have that I belonged
ahead of her in any line.
It was something I had said,
I think
about the humus
looking like spackle.
I tasted her briefly with my eyes;
sharp DKNY suit,
Truex bag almost matching
her Prada shoes,
wrist bent to flash
a gold linked Gucci watch,
smile cold, poised and polished,
and I laughed, at her.
I said she didn't know the half of it;
you see it takes being crazy
to get me out of bed each day,
then at night
I often think again
I must be crazy,
to want to crawl back in
to sleep knowing that awaiting me,
in my dreams,
are the faces of the stalking dead.
Yes, I assured her
I am crazy,
living in a world where the best of us
are killing children in the name of peace;
where the rest of us
become so preoccupied
with the petty details of our lives
that we cease to see
the horror that surrounds us every day.
Yeah,
I laughed at her,
politely of course,
and she paused
salad plate in one hand,
cold drink in the other,
and tried to look too deeply
for an instant;
so I took off my dark glasses
(I wear them almost all the time -
a habit from living in the dark)
and let her look
further back
inside the closest portal to my mind,
into my eyes,
just inside the vestibule of consciousness.
Now, I'm no fool,
we were standing at the buffet tables
for a classy work event;
to let her look too deeply
would have sent her screaming
running to escape.
I know
because I've made that mistake before.
So, I let her look
just a little,
turned up the lights just a notch,
let some little thoughts run about
for her to watch,
then I looked back
into her eyes,
looked right through
her dressed up power woman
working wonder disguise,
remembering
it's considered impolite
to hypnotize the unsuspecting
even when curiosity's
gotten to the best of them;
she shook
a tremor slight but just enough
for me to know
to reach out and ground her
with my hand upon her sleeve,
on her elbow
slight pressure on the Dim Mak point
just inside the joint,
to distract her
nothing more,
I left her with the choice
to believe or walk away.
I watched her eyes grow large,
saw the struggle
as her intellect tried to reassert itself,
get back in charge of what she was allowed to see,
wide eyed
like a child with a child's voice,
she softly said to me
you really are insane and you don't have a choice.
I smiled,
touched her cheek,
knowing I would have to speak
as I turned the light back down,
dark glasses went back on,
I asked her if she'd seen enough;
remember now,
this was a tough hard boiled broad,
a stylin' take charge manager
of people, things and great events,
a person known for her uncommon
solid common sense,
I told her not to worry
reminded her she knew me
that I live inside the law.
Now, I don't know exactly
what it was she saw,
when I let her take a little look
inside my mind,
I just know
it was more than she could get
her own thoughts around,
just reflections of the world staring back
into her face,
and now she knows that crazy,
sometimes,
is the only place to find survival
in a mind that knows
when the tidal waves of life
will begin to rise and curl.

You are indeed a compilation of newfound wisdom upon a lifetime of wisdom upon ancient wisdoms...  and our own insanities surely lead us along that path of future wisdoms yet uncovered...

I enjoyed this immensely, icebox...

icebox

Not many people take of their dark glasses long enough for anyone to see who they really are.  This was very interesting to read.

She encountered the main course, but was unable to...or? simply refused to taste.
I'm keeping this one.

wow...I have met "another you"...

every word of this I could feel as if I was she looking through you.

Sad though, what if she wanted to know more,
understand more?
