Maginot Man

My walls are not down
but they’re somehow
irrelevant, standing
proud and silly,
long after the invention of cannon.
Or rather perhaps they’re
fixed
steady,
impregnable,
relentlessly guarding
the wrong place.

                                               I didn’t expect you
                                                    from this direction
                                                         or with such
                                                             blinding speed.
                                                               Across my
                                                          spirit’s northern flank
                                                    you sped without
                                              impedance
                                        and before I could
                                    respond
                             swift tanks
                        of you went
                    storming through
                my heart.

There were
no walls then,
no walls that
mattered,
maybe no walls
at all.

Some surprise attacks leave us with agony of defeat... others renew our souls and show us what living is all about.

This is simply superb.

Excellent...I visited places of war in Verdun, France.  I remember one location where rifle barrels and bayonets were sticking from the ground where men were buried from artillery while waiting in the trenches...also visited surrounding areas that still had signs posted warning of unexploded ordinances...James

this is awesome...

sometimes being blindsided is a good thing, and sometimes not...but at least you still know that your walls aren't permanent.

James,

I am taken by this inspired writing.  You know, the shape of this could be flanking troops or an "angel wing" on the left side.  Look at it:

                                                   I didn’t expect you
                                                    from this direction
                                                         or with such
                                                             blinding speed.
                                                               Across my
                                                          spirit’s northern flank
                                                    you sped without
                                              impedance
                                        and before I could
                                    respond
                             swift tanks
                        of you went
                    storming through
                my heart.

Thank you for sharing this with us.  I can tell this is a very special piece.
