The Angel of Death I lay awake ‘atrembling Bathed in a sweat of fear, As the death angel stood above me And whispered in my ear, “Thy time has come, Oh mortal, When life is no longer thine And thy soul shall keep me company On a journey most divine.” I spoke then out of terror, “ I beseech thee, hear my plea Let me live yet awhile.” But this moved not the deity. Said I, “ I believed not in the Lord, His wishes I did thwart. In pain or fear or trouble His counsel I never sought. My life is full of sin My soul steeped in depravity And yet I was content … Until thou came to me. ‘Cause, a sinner I may be But one good deed I have done, I’ve been good and kind To my fellowmen.” “Times have changed,” the angel said, “Since the saints and prophets departed, And though people revere their remains Yet heed not what they said. The world is now a cursed place Where greed and cruelty thrives And though humans there be Yet humanity no longer survives. As such the Lord no longer seeks The devout, the pious the honest, Content he is with him Who to his fellow man is kindest.” “So prepare thyself, Oh mortal, And let us be gone.” And before I could scarce reply My soul had left for the heavenly home. |

This is a wonderfully introspective work about the journey "home" Anwaar - I enjoyed your interpretation in verse... |

Hi, Anwaar! Now I know what you've been up to! You've been conversing with the powers that be! I do believe that that Angel of Death needs a vacation! EA |
