A Friend, Losing

Is it that you half hear now,
your ears like wardens
taking some words,
turning others silent?

No, it is more urgent.
If I shout, you hear less,
then not at all,
or worse, words appear
that were not said.

If  I whisper, my voice dies
like a mouse in a snow bank;
nothing of me arrives
and nothing comes back, though
you stalk my laugh, remorseless.

You understood then, felt then;
now, time won’t roll to it,
the thread of us fades,
thinning to a wisp, a thought,
a memory that I feed all,
trying to nourish, save,
hold enough, though I know
you are already gone.

Ed, something that's already gone can't be saved. Can it?

By the time I reached the last line, tears were falling, not just threatening. For it reminds me so much of my dad... the questions answered aren't the ones asked... the decline is a knife and you can't dull the cut. This is superb...

ahhh, Ed....I think we mourn this kind of loss as much or more then a loss by death.  This distance, though close, is so very sad.

Yeah, Martie 'n Ruth...you know about this one, and what a hurt it is to me. It's not hopeless, but close to it, and that just cracks my heart. Friends like that one keep you sane, and losing one really knocks a leg out from under the table.

Wish me luck, because I'll need that and more.
