It is a tree and nothing more,
That stands at guard on distant moor,
No knight of old in mystic quest,
Nor soldier bold with armored breast,
‘Tis but a tree and nothing more,
That stands at guard on distant moor.
Outstretched limbs in skyward thrust,
In reach the warmth of sun’s combust,
Land’s scape unbroken but for the breech,
Of single tree in heaven’s reach,
Aye, but a tree and nothing more,
In silent guard on distant moor.
It is a ghost some folk implore,
Or dragon fierce from days of yore,
Now Lucifer a few suggest,
As sentry on horizon’s crest.
Nay, just a tree and nothing more,
At stand on guard on distant moor.
With branches gnarled in upward soar,
No mighty gale, nor force of war,
Has rent lone tree; from earth has wrest,
Just leafless limbs by winds undressed,
It is a tree and nothing more,
That stands at guard on distant moor.
Across bare plain, come break of morn,
A single horse, with rider borne,
Passes tree, then fades from sight,
To slide from view as does the night,
Left behind with nothing more,
A tree at guard on distant moor.
It is a tree and nothing more,
Aye, but a tree and nothing more.

Excellent; you took me for a journey through time, visualizing what the old tree had seen in it's many years....

Tim, excellent.  The sounds this provokes...
is magnificent.  Everything about it reaches the core of this reader.  Thank you.

Ahhhhh.....but this has a Poe feel to it. Haunting indeed

It's just a tree and nothing more
Some "sightless" people might implore
Though others blessed, much like yourself,
May realize this fine object's wealth
And I, in reading, softly curse
You've left me haunted by your verse
