The road to Boulder
is strewn with maxi malls
and auto dealerships
lined up as close as possible
to hideous townhouses stacked
obscenely
like overstuffed shoeboxes.
More civilization than nature
was visible, yet I enjoyed the trip
along the highway to the foot of the Rockies.
Sitting quietly in the back seat of the bus,
smiling at nature’s powerful thunderstorm
bearing down upon us, oblivious to our schedule,
I pondered the view from all angles.

For a short stretch of rolling dirt piles
alongside the highway to Boulder,
scraggly twisted old oaks hung
their withering heads to the ground,
somehow still rooted haphazardly
to the vanishing rolling hills.
Memories of the past furrowed my brow with
visions of the way this place must have looked
when tumbleweeds outnumbered humans.
The odd contrasts struck me sharply,
jolted me upright in my RTD'd seat
as we passed the Jaguar dealership.
(as if such a regal, splendid creature
of God would ever want to cross this pathway,
surrounded by the refuse of civilization)

I found myself wondering,
even as my mind was wandering
how many of these barely-living trees
might survive next year’s push to progress.
Next trip to Boulder,
I shall bring along my camera,
to document for future generations
proof that there once were trees growing
alongside the highway,
on the road to Boulder.

When you shoot those pics, Kacy, post them where we can let your words take root in ourselves.

Kacy:

first: remind me to sit next to you on the bus next time
second: this reminds me of here, the streets used to be lined with trees and bushes, was beautiful.  So serene. Until the city had to widen the streets and took away all the trees, replaced them with steel lamposts and no longer were there hedges but new sidewalks, concrete slabs.
I watch the old videos we have and photos and we were all smiling a lot more too . . .

Beautiful mind ya got there

Last year, I saw woodland mushrooms growing in what was supposed to be desert in Arizona.

The planet can survive us.  I am not sure we can survive us.

Thank you for sharing this.

It's good to see you, Kacy!  I was in Colorado as a child, I remember it as beautiful!  That was a long time ago.

OK, susie littlewings, I'll let you know bfore I go on the next trip

Ice, that might be true. We only be observers of irreversible changes we set in motion yearas ago. Then again, some say these things would have happened irregardles of human intervention.

Martie, thank you for reading and commenting. I never saw Colorado until last year, except from the air, so I can only imagine how it might have looked...except I've seen some really old photos, and it definitely isn't the same; but then neither is the San Fernando Valley or anywhere else on the planet I suppose. *sigh*

Ethel, glad you enjoyed the ride and view.

I've seen so much of this that I tend to turn away now, or deal with it only as poetry.
Parhaps there should be more of these words here.
We are such folly in our care-less-ness,
Our survivors, should there be any, will ponder the irony of it all . . .

Oh, and thanks for sharing this.

(big hugggsssssss) Oh Kacy, I have lived in Colorado for seventeen years, and it too hurts me so much to see the urban sprawl impacting the whole center of the state from Fort Collins to Pueblo! (sad sigh) I have witnessed such projects as FlatIrons Crossing, Superior, Louisville, and others disrupting the serenity and overlooks all along US. 36 and I believe it will only get worse, then man will do nothing but lament and regret over their own ignorance and selfishness! In fact, I am moving to Portland in two years so I can be near the ocean, my favorite environment of all, and Portland, to me, is the most beautiful of all metropolitan cities in the United States at this time! I pray for Mother Nature, sweet friend, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Kacy, thank you for sharing!

May love and light always shine upon you!

Love,
Noah Eaton

Wandering glider, hello, nice to meet you. Thanks for reading and commenting. It is sad to see nature forever taking a back seat.

Noah, Portland, heh? Yes, it's a cool city, I've spent some time there. For me, further north than that is even cooler. LOL, not just temp wise either.

Vandana, love that new icon! Thanks.
