When I awoke that morning, I was one year older than I had been the night before. That day appeared like any other day ~ the sun was shining, birds were singing, and my bedroom was filled with the scent of the climbing roses that grew outside my window. Yet, somehow, everything seemed different. It was as if I had awakened in some far-off land that was unfamiliar to me. I felt disconnected and in a bubble. My perceptions of both myself, and of my life, had changed. With that birthday, I not only WAS older, I FELT older. As I lie there on my bed, images of my younger days raced through my mind. ~ Exciting days; glamorous days; I'll-live-forever days; I'm queen-of-the-world days. As if in a dream-state, I soon found myself standing before the antique dressing mirror that had been bequeathed to me by my grandmother. I tentatively slipped my dressing gown off my shoulders, letting it slide down my body to the floor. There I stood in all my glory, with no one to judge me but myself. I had never before taken a really close look at my body. Whatever physical attributes I may have had in my younger days, I had taken for granted. Why on Earth was I taking stock of my personal inventory when my body parts were in a state of decline and heading south for the up-coming winter of my days?!? I took a deep breath and set about ass-essing the damage. As I nervously ran my fingers through my hair, a gasp escaped my lips! Oh, no! Please say it isn't so! I then heard myself saying the very words my Mom had once said, "I don't have any gray hairs! They're just my natural highlights!" Where had all the years gone? History was repeating itself--and far too quickly for my liking! Next stop was my mid-section! The six-pack had gone! I must have drank all six bottles! Oh, my gawd! On closer inspection, the 'damage' was not as bad as I had at first thought. Yes, my tummy was rounder, less firm; HOWEVER, "I had given birth to two darling baby girls!", I cried out loud in defense of myself! I then began touching face and noticed that around my eyes, fine lines had appeared seemingly overnight! Yet again, I heard myself uttering words that my Mom had once said. "Those aren't wrinkles! They're just laugh lines!" Laughing is good, I thought out loud--so, lines that are caused by laughing, must be good as well! My hips were next on the hit list! Yes, they were fuller--there was no denying that--but pleasingly so. I was more curvaceous and womanly than I had been in those days, when "thin-as-a-pin" was in! My eyes turned upwards--or was that downwards?!?--to my chest! I had actually grown a bosom! The added pounds had come with some unexpected advantages! Taking inventory of my body parts was turning into a not-so-bad thing! I had always regarded others in a caring, non-judgmental manner; however, when it came to looking at myself, I had only given cursory glances. During my personal expose, I truly did discover something rather special. I wasn't merely becoming older, I was actually getting better--an older, yet better, me! As I stood there appraising my naked body, I looked into my own eyes--into the depths of my own soul, seeing the real inner--and outer--me. In that defining moment, something miraculous happened--acceptance. I had become comfortable with the changes that had been occurring in my body. I was aging like a fine Bordeaux! As I stood there, baring my ass-ets in front of the mirror, I proclaimed, "Happy birthday, Linda Lou! You are all woman--and you are beautiful!" James ~ lol cute, James, real cute! My birthday was on July 30 and it does make one stop and think about the passing of time and how it affects us as we grow older. I'm not as over-the-hill as my poetry may imply, but time has a way of catching up with us! At times we really can be our own worst enemy! Goodnight! A belated happy birthday to you, an honest, caring, empathetic, and beautiful person. I can relate to the mandatory acknowledgement of time which must occur at one time or another (denial is futile). A soulful write... -MVS You CAN make a difference: |

AH so that is what you were doing whilst we were wishing you happy birthday...doing some nekkid thinking! I've never done that on a birthday...I may try it! I'm sure, well, I KNOW every wrinkle and pound makes you even more beautiful...because with it, comes wisdom! Self acceptance is brilliant, i'm glad you've found it..i'm sure it was one of your best birthday presents. Lindy Lou, i love ya inside and out! Instant karma's gonna get you. |

Linda - yup, I know the feeling well. One day you just happen to look into the window of a store and notice the reflection of a stranger...a middle-aged woman...ooops!....it's you. Well, me really...whatever.... But, after awhile she becomes as familiar as that comfy pair of sweatpants that have taken over for the tight jeans. She's not so bad...in fact I think I'll keep her! love this write, Chris |

"thin-as-a-pin" been a long time since I was that.. yes as each birthday comes it gets harder and harder to look at myself. but did you watch Leslie Stahl the other night with Jamie Leigh Curtis...where she made them photo her with all flaws and without any makeup or enhancements for a magazine? That took courage...and she is more beautiful for it. M |

The beauty of this is in the write - not in the mirror. For you have taken the layers of your spirit - and left them here for us to take stock of not what you are, but WHO you are. Just this morning as I was coming to work I was thinking along the same lines - it's up to us to remind the teens and 20 year olds that it's not how you LOOK - but how you ACT - that will determine the rest of your life. Of course - I had a little help from watching "Pay It Forward" last night...we never know when our time here is gone - so Linda - continue to pay it forward like this, m'dear, and you will NEVER be forgotten.... |

Oh EA, indeed you have given yourself the greatest birthday gift of all...acceptance! I love this, my angel friend. 'Tis a keeper 'til the end. You know...I have always had problems accepting myself. Now at 41, I find acceptance to be stronger than ever was... So, aging is not so bad. Funny, I remember crying when I turned 18...sheesh! Hugs to you beautiful soul! Patricia |

(big angel friendship hugs) Awwwwwwwwww, I just love the confidence and wisdom in your heart shared through your mother and grandmother and loved ones, sweet friend, you may be a little older but you are forever young at heart and you are the graceful and loving friend we know and love everyday! (kiss on cheek) You are just like what Maya Angelou said, "You are a woman...naturally. Phenominal woman!" and that's you! (smiles) God Bless You, sweet friend, yay, we all love you so much! You have such a beautiful heart, sweet Linda, thank you for sharing! May love and light always shine upon you! Love, Noah Eaton I don't need no proof when it comes to God and truth |

Hmmmmm, Linda....I must confess that I dare not do what you have done.....for there are far too many souths and not enough norths. I look at people my age....and I say.... "NO WAY"....I can't possibly be that old! Truth be known....I understand, I agree and though the years change us, we become more attractive in many ways.... Man, if I had only started writing poetry about 40 years ago.... |
