Cicada You warble unpretentiously In faultless time-locked synchrony Above my ear relentlessly The hover of your drone Parched summer stillness you disturb Out-trilling cricket, toad and bird With steady, shrill, forewarning word From bark, your humble throne Released from thin, translucent cage You strum your part on season’s stage Unwritten verse on summer’s page Engraved in the unknown No key of knowledge can unlock The mysteries of your pulsing clock That echo off an aged rock Possessed by you alone I bow to you, the cycle’s hum The song of life, the August drum The ever swinging pendulum The secrets that you own Inherently your hymns atone The spirit’s search for the unknown Elziabeth Santos |

I'm just sitting here smiling at you.... first of all...what a wonderful picture..By the size of your lovely smile--those must be grandchildren. And as for this gift of rhyme divine... what a treat to read aloud...and that rhyme scheme and that pure poetry closing couplet left me giddy. So good to read you again sweet poetess of grace. You're going to hear my voice in the morning calling your name ... |

Reading this with a smile. Dog wanted out early EARLY this morning...around 3:00 a.m. What I didn't know was, she thought she'd bring one of those little fellows back in WITH her. Do you know when they fly into your bare leg, they sting? LOL... Thanks for the smiles, Liz! |

Elizabeth, I had to stop by to tell you how much I admire your work. I finally posted that poem I was working on...I counted the syllables in one of your treasures, and said to myself..."Self, we are going Ms. Santos' route!" I worked on what I had until 2 a.m. and posted Sunday morn. You are indeed an inspiration to me to continue working on my meter and rhyme. "Cicada" is just so lovely, Elizabeth. I will continue to seek out your work so that I may continue to learn...as well as enjoy the beauty you offer with your verses. Thanks... Patricia P |

All righty then... You've got five quatrains containing three consecutively rhyming lines of iambic tetrameter followed by a line of iambic trimeter - with a final couplet that rhymes with the last lines of each previous quatrain... You've got a flawless rhyme scheme of a-a-a-b/c-c-c-b/d-d-d-b/e-e-e-b/f-f-f-b/b-b Have I mentioned that this is a flawless poem, dear lady???... |
