Splitting

My boy reflects glimpses of his future man-self
in the store windows, while he tells me
of the imminent divorce of his best friend’s parents.

I register shock, then sadness for their two boys,
especially Danny, a dwarf
with chronic swelling on the brain
that routinely sends him to surgery,
this child who returned to school this week
with two “C” shaped scars on his closely shaved head,
baseball cap fixed in place in the classroom.

My son opens the door to The Yogurt Palace
and explains how he plans to comfort them
with his own perspective.

Butter pecan cones in hand,
we sit in a red vinyl-covered booth.
Pictures of old car shows litter the walls;
oldies music plays in the background.

In between licks,
he says he’ll tell them it’s hard at first,
that he used to miss his Dad,
but now he’s okay with it.

We leave the store,
return to window shopping.
He looks at my reflection,
then shrugs.
You get used to stuff,
he says.

I look away.

Son's do shine through the thickest things ....

             life is full of losses,
all we can do is pick up
the pieces and try to make
                them fit better.

You have been a great parent!

Corinne?

You've done it again.

This is amazing.

Send this one (along with Cecelia) in to a magazine or two. (Is Woman's Day still around?)

I'm betting they will publish...

Your son is an amzing spirit, just like his mom.
