Jean excused herself, grinning,
“Merle you owe the kid a beer”
and I looked around…
for Merle.

That old drunk had sure rearranged my day,
owed me a case if he owed me an ounce
and a thanks for covering his butt
would’ve been nice.

“Which one’s Merle?”, I hoped Buddy would know
but for a minute I thought he hadn’t heard me,
He didn’t answer, just seemed to be chuckling
at something his beer must’ve said…
because no one else was around.

“Jean had some fun with us tonight Mike.
There isn’t any Merle,  I did the dishes last night”,
he sounded innocent enough
but I felt my chain being jerked,
even if I didn’t know why.

“Jean had some fun huh?”, I smirked,
the day now playing back in my head.

Buddy had been sitting at the bar
in Rita’s Place when I came in
and was still there,
drinking cup after cup of coffee,
when Jean called me back from the door
and again…as I was lead into
a Georgian version of Hell’s kitchen,
I’d noticed him laughing to himself.

He was the one had some fun tonight
I knew it sure as I knew my name,
but for now, I let it go…

I see you got yer "writin' irons" in good working order.

I hope your knitting these things together. You may be writing a book here....By accident! Sheesh.

And look Dunc, you're welcome to any words that I've strung together.

I love the character names you come up with,
and these wonderful tales you tell.

Sounds like you've found your niche goober!

Well its about time you revived these characters...they need to breath...lots of stories left to tell...and I know  a certain slave driver Capt will be as pleased as I am that you continued on with this.
We are starting to feel like we know them..
heck...if goob will do my dishes..I'll make him breakfast...I heard he likes Grits LOL
Cool write Dunc...keep em coming..the moth never gets enough poetry ya know.
I SAID POETRY!!!  rofl

No matter what the differences
No matter what the cost
When words become our weapons ...
All that's beautiful is lost.

Me thinks I have missed something somewhere
about Merle....

Duncan,  this was very interesting and the
write conveyed a distinct but enjoyable
mood.  Well done.
