Legacy of Iron The heavy, iron vise sits in the dilapidated shed on a half-rotted workbench, a survivor of the years daddy and I spent growing up with it holding every excuse we used to be together, with it holding his heart, and mine, slowly melding our souls until we became men, friends for life, equals, yet father and son. Today I'm removing the four bolts that have always held it to the bench. It's going to a brand-new workbench, in a brand-new shed, sitting beneath the trees of the house my wife and I built, and now, my children will gather around as we thread pipe, fix bicycles, lawnmowers, broken toys, and through me feel the love it has given, learn the lessons it has taught. We will become one together, father and son, and the daughter we know is coming, And one day, when the time is right, one of them will remove the four bolts securing it to the bench, pick up this heavy, iron Sage, and move it to a shed of their own, where the bonding will begin . . . anew. w. james beard, jr. © june 2003 [This message has been edited by jwesley (06-20-2003 03:37 PM).] |
