Silent tears slid down her tortured face. Swollen eyes stared otherwhere, out the streaked window. The corners of her thin, tight lips were held down by the gravity of motherhood. Her thoughts were with an honest child, dark haired, and round cheeked. Large, bright eyes, knowing, pleading: "Mommy, do you love me?" The weight of responsibilities hung heavy on her fragile body. Her shoulders sagged. her hip ached. Her frail, thin arms layed tired in her lap. And still the child haunted her, asking with its eyes: "Mommy, am I safe?" The cold, dirty clouds greyed her pained face, as she thought of the gun, loaded, and promising, she'd held in her lap only an hour before. The heart or the head? The damnable question, still unanswered, for a lifetime, now. The ghost child, sturdy, and solemn, stared back at her through the frigid rain, saying, softly, with each warm heartbeat: "Mommy, I love you." The breath caught in her throat. Her small mouth gaped to inhale. She slowed, and swallowed the black pain in her chest. And the silent tears slid down her tortured face. Psalms 20:7 "Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God." [This message has been edited by NickTofteland (06-19-2003 06:02 PM).] |
