Odd Lessons

I

Linda was a peacock on a beach of pigeons and gulls –
curly black mane, olive skin and Egyptian eyes.
She rolled her ancestry off an exotic tongue –
I’m French-Moroccan-Jew, she’d purr.

The surfers were used to skinny blondes in sandy bikinis.
When Linda swung her round rump in a mango
striped thong, the boys went spastic.

She liked to sunbathe topless. Sometimes we’d convince her to wait
until the tourists had taken their lobster bods back to their hotels.
Other times, she’d laugh and do it anyway, turning over
only when the lifeguards arrived – giving them a peek and a wink.

Linda kept her sexual predilection to herself back then.

II

Linda and I were roommates. For a while, it was fun –
we were all about dieting - starving ourselves until we got high eating.
We practiced amateur meditation and drank espresso to kill hunger pangs.

A few months later, Linda let me in on her secret –
then promptly moved her lover into our two-bedroom apartment.
They kept to themselves - in her room with the mattress on the floor
and the stereo playing.

I hadn’t given much thought to this lifestyle - I was a naïve nineteen.
I brought a few guys by, but they found the arrangement all too fascinating.

I moved out after Linda and her lover lost their jobs.
Still, she followed, moving into the apartment above mine, one block from the ocean.

She said she had visions about earthquakes and California dropping off into the ocean. She was right about the earthquake (1989), but not about California.
By this time we had parted in an unfriendly way. I thought she’d gone nuts. She didn’t appreciate that.

She moved east with her lover.

I heard the lover had a child by artificial insemination;
and they had taken jobs in a hospital somewhere in middle America.

III

About a year later, Linda sent me a letter. I had never received hate mail before.

It took me a long time to respond. I said I was surprised that one so spiritual would let hate rule her life.

I never heard from her again.

ah man, that's creepy and sad from an outsiders perspective, wonder how she could stay mad and get madder over the years apart, don't let it get you down though

I don't really know how to comment on this. Except to tell you that somehow, for some reason, some part of her expected, wanted, needed your approval.

And having received it, wouldn't have changed anything. She'd have just switched her focus to something else.

Just a guess.

Corrine, it sounds like she wanted both life styles...
yours and hers.

By this time we had parted in an unfriendly way. I thought she’d gone nuts. She didn’t appreciate that.

She moved east with her lover

And was wanting you to approve of whatever she
chose to do....

About a year later, Linda sent me a letter. I had never received hate mail before.

I never heard from her again.

And still got mad when you didn't agree with all she did.

Lady, you can tell a story, making your reader
feel as if they're looking at the scenes unfold.

Very good writing....

As I said before... you could write myth...

This is well tld and touching.... the story itself leaves enough room for the reader to create images and situations around it...fill in the spaces on the edges if you will...and make it real to them.

the fact that the conflict/relationship between the two characters is unresolved in some ways and seemingly important enough to both to exist... is an interesting view to ponder...

Well done my friend..and certainly a thought provoking read..

She still admires you.

And cannot come to admit it.

Hugs for this...

Over the years, I have learned not speculate on the "whys" some people do what they do.  We all come from different places with different frames of reference.  Unless she is willing (it sounds like she is not) to tell you her "whys", you will never know the truth.  Unfortunately, sometimes people don't really know the "whys" themselves.

I enjoyed your work here.  Makes me think of some answered "whys" in my own life.

oh isnt life, and aren't people odd?

i enjoyed this read, felt as though i was there, living it with you.

i'm sure from your answer you gave her, you know why she felt this way.

hopefully she'll take a look at herself, and stop being indeed, consumed by hate, due to dislike of herself.

much love, gemma xxxx

wow, Corinne.
A great write. I wonder if it was she that was disappointed so much in her own life, or maybe not as comfortable as she wished everyone to believe...for taking it out on you, made no sense.

Corinne

I enjoyed reading this...like a piece of your life, told in such a way that I felt like a friend listening.  Thanks for sharing a part of yourself.
