Moved from a shack to a barn

0 posted 2003-06-16 12:23 PM

I bade Ol’ Scratch
come down to my shack
But not for me
Not this time

But, for one of mine
For just a dog

I invited a visit
from the cowled collector

And he arrived
with the solution in a solution
that was oddly as pink
as the sun that struggled
to lift the mourning fog
from the river nearby

My forehead and nose
were pressed into the fur
of my old friends neck

An old yellow dog
my hair, his shroud

My one hand rested
splayed on his chest
the other
tourniquet tight around a leg

Preventing, for a moment
the spreading solvent
from breaking the bonds
of Earth and Sky

Too soon
I felt the Harbingers’ hand
pass beneath my own
and deep within
my companionable wreck
to find the flame and pinch the wick

The dark visage
then beamed beatific
at this gentlest of egress
and gifted me with a requiem in motion
A spiraling swirl of living petals

Butterflies of several kinds
appeared and arose from were he’d lain
in mimic of a candles’ smoke

This, as near as I can describe it, was my old friends' last morning.

Oddly beautiful

I know the feeling. I held my 15 year old Afghan, Ginger, when she had to be "put to sleep" also. It's an awful feeling, the dread before...but I wanted to be there with her...

Ed... I've been there...and I've shed my share of tears onto the neck of an old friend who aged faster than me...or just got tired of watching one suffer..

this piece took me back and stirred things
I usually try to bury...

I'm sorry for your loss....

I (we) were very fortunate to have a vet friend come to the shack to do this.

He passed gently on the deck in sight of his river, where he liked to be.

Ed -

Johnny is up there running around with Bear -
I am sure they are having the
time of their lives -
being labs and all -
getting into all kinds of trouble
(they were our dogs after all)

This is beautiful
I am so so terribly sorry

Take solace in the fact that he can
finally eat in peace

Much Love
and what a beautiful vision
you have created here
He is wagging in pride
I am sure
xxoo

you sneaked in when I was replying . . .

I am glad he went "home" from home with you
by his side
and "just a dog"  I know better than that

How well you have described this bond which can be so much deeper than with most other humans.  Don't be shocked to see him tease you through the eyes of another.  Thank you for sharing with great skill this very touching moment.

Ed,  condolences offered.  Have been down
that road myself,  many times.  They are
a part of us, aren't they?

You wrote this very well,  I enjoyed the
trip you took me on with your descriptiveness.

Nice write.

I am
very proud
to have met
this finest of creatures

a nobleman
sleek and sure

a man sure to uphold his heritage
with sly wit
but with utmost
intent

the intelligence in his eyes
belied his form

dapper, even in fur

and you Ed...
were his friend enough
to know
a gentleman doesn't ever
show
the baser things in life

and he thanks you...
he thanks you
for being
his

well done my friend

I'm back.
I can't tell you how many times
I read this yesterday, this morning...

all I can say,
Ed...

is that I was always told
trust a man
who loves his dog.

You've touched the heart of every one of us who've been in a similar situation... this is a tender and beautiful tribute to your friend.

Who knows? *S* Your pal may be chasing mine up some heavenly tree by now. *S*
