"Ah wuz wondrin' where ya was-- now bring dem groceries here t'me. I thought that you would miss da bus-- thank gawd you caught da last ferry." I was white and trembling, carrying a bag of booze on my way to Mid City, by way of Jackson avenue. I did not know this shriveled prune, leaning forward on her cane, so I looked at her confused as she said it once again: "Come here you--come sit by me." she pounded ground for emphasis with the rubber tip of cane as she licked her dry wide lips. Then I noticed where I stood-- where a white girl should not be-- right outside "the projects" there where even blacks tread carefully. I sat by her most gratefully, knowing this was not my world. I heard her whisper then to me, "You be crazy, lil' white girl." Then she glared some men to shame as if she were their old grammaw. "Sit by me when dat bus come, then you ride dat bus real far." She didn't even look at me, but sat there smacking her dry lips-- an old black angel growing wings-- sent to me? Yeah. Dat she was. |

All old souls, regardless of their physical age, become caretakers of the young. It is an obligation which simply is accepted in time. This is a wonderfully crafted story with many doorways leading to thoughts unwritten. |

Serenity~ I am sorry I don't tell you often enough how much I enjoy the slices of life you write. You're in a class by yourself, but I suspect you knew that already. 'Tis true~ |

serenity...I suspect if it had been the other way...you would have done the same. In fact, I know you would. This was great! |

"She didn't even look at me, but sat there smacking her dry lips-- an old black angel growing wings-- sent to me? Yeah. Dat she was." Sent to you, indeed...just as YOU were sent to us. Gawd...you never cease to amaze me, Karen. I could see her...really SEE her as I read this. You have a way of bringing stories to life with your words; and I, too, could listen to you for hours. I absolutely LOVE this, Karen. Big hugs to you, lady.. "My friends are my estate." |

Thanks for digging up another of my personal favorites. (I think my favorites have less to do with skill and more to do with my favorite memories) and Jer? grin. I didn't think you even KNEW that part of town. I went to Business College on Jackson Ave. tho (Soule') and yanno? my old dark angel was right--I AM a crazy lil white girl. Hugs all. Thanks for reading. |
