The Old Button Box |

It sits on a table at the top of the stairs In a room that has no need of locks The treasures within are the stories to share All inside of the old button box... It's just an old box, made of hardwood and tin It looks plain and simple, but yet There's a magic surrounding the contents within And some wonders I'll never forget... The old box was part of my Grandmother's past And that of her Grandmother's, too It was made in the Highlands out of wood that would last For a bride, it was perfect and new... The first time I saw it, my eyes opened wide For the buttons it held were of glass All shapes, and all sizes, each made with such pride By the same heart that loved that young lass... To me, it is priceless, and a treasure so rare Just to touch such a memory of old To remember the stories of love that we shared Me and Grandmother, God rest her soul... Now the box is my own, and when I touch what's inside I drift back to a sweet time and place When the box was presented as a gift to his bride With the kiss that he placed on her face... Oh, my goodness! My grandmother had a collection of buttons as well!! Everytime she as sewing I loved to examine each and every one. There usually was a story behind each button too! Enjoyed. Chris "At one glance |

Very touching poem! My great-grandmother had a jar full of buttons (Now, it is mine) and I remember playing with the old buttons when I was little. It is one of the most meaningful memories of my greatgrandmother. Thanks for reminding me! Every new beginning comes from some other beginning's end... |

Thank you Helen, and so glad you enjoyed the memories...after all, they are the precious things in this life! Thank you peppermint35, and as I wrote of my angel of a Grandmother, my heartstrings got a good tug too!! Thank you EA, and it's ok to get weepy...in fact, as poets, it is pretty much par for the course, as anyone here would probably tell you!! Thank you Chris, and I was lucky to hear about some of the special stories behind those buttons...I'm glad you enjoyed the flashback!! Thank you Martie, and it's surprising how many of us have experienced the same tender joys...we're blessed with good memories!! Thank you Ladybug, and may those memories be passed down through your family, as they will bring as much pleasure to each person you share with!! I speak from the Voice Of Experience |

A button box holds so much past, and buttons it all up to the future, holding together warm coats and sweaters of content... I know just that box... |

What beautiful thoughts in reply, Lady in White! There is much one can learn from the simple things in life, the overlooked things...when taken for granted, the lessons are lost... Thank you, my friend...~V~ I speak from the Voice Of Experience |

Thank you Bon-Bon...(love that handle!), and I think you should ask your Mom about those buttons...it's always fun to hear the stories, and it gives you a connection with the past! ~V~ I speak from the Voice Of Experience |

VOE~ What a treasure of pleasure~ As a collector of old buttons and the boxes that hold them ... I can appreciate every line of this~ Yes, Great Grandmother's button box sits in my room as well as my heart~ I've taken the time to record the known stories of each set of buttons for my granddaughter~ What a wonderfully nostaltic piece this is~ *Huglets* ~*Marge*~ ~*The pen of the poet never runs out of ink, as long as we breathe.*~ |

I have a button box also...and have added to it over the years. The are enough memories from where each was taken, that a book of poems could be written. ~smiling~ M |

VOE Oh such beautiful memories. I also have one like everyone else that replied to this marvelous writing, and I have found many old buttons, quite a few that were mine, and I remember the pieces of clothing that they were on. I can see the twinkle in your eyes as you wrote this. Great job. Ariana |

Thank you Marge, and your granddaughters are very lucky to have you record the past like that for them. Those memories are so very precious, and I'm glad I could share mine with you! ~V~ Thank you Nancy, and I think there are a lot of us who smile when we remember those boxes...(even some of the guys share the memories!!) ~V~ Thank you nakdthoughts, and now we will be expecting some of those memories from you!! The fun part of remembering is the sharing...~V~ Thank you Ariana, and yes...you guessed it...that twinkle was there, along with a tear or two as I remembered all the happy times I shared with my precious angel of a Grandmother. She shared the stories, and gave a little girl the desire to write. So glad to see you here, my friend!! ~V~ I speak from the Voice Of Experience |
