When myth meets myth, the collision is very real. Stanislaw Lec, “Unkempt Thoughts” 1962. ~*~ “Be fair as fair as this day so rare,” The young maiden spoke to the cool night’s air Where flights of fancy took her thoughts Through a summer’s eve beyond compare. Swelled twilight filled her heart with glee As night’s dreams were soon to wend For maiden had imagined winged flight Upon which her dreams would ascend. He heard the silken whispered prayer In cave’s dark crevice chasm With stretch of wings and shift of tail He rose up, this cursed phantasm The voice so pure beckoned His heavy heart beat apace Dare he find the maiden and Subject her to his face? The maiden with her eyes aglow Sat amongst the closest stars of fire Wondering what night’s dreams would bring With a penchant’s want to retire But voices seemed to stray the wind With promise of effervesce To sleep, then dream, seemed far away While the sky began to opalesce Obsidian sky cloaked his flight Winging fiercely ‘cross the plain Ruddy scales upon his flank Swelled unsheathed with the strain Hope blossomed in his rigid breast That maiden would be his curs’d release He vowed that n’er again would he Seek answers in a woman’s caprice Then dark fell ‘pon the maid in glen Only lake shone ‘neath moon’s clear light Now to walk t’ward castle’s glow, but then Something fell across moon’s far height Some wing’d great living thing of lore Her hand to eyes and brow to clear But nay, she, now frozen by the shore Though midsummer day’s heat still seared He spied the maiden by the lake Her eyes caught him in their stare She stood her ground as he set down With little grace to spare He watched her emerald eyes darken But fear was not the cause And so he waited for her to speak Clenching his razored claws “Are you but myth, or myth am I?” Spoke the maiden to the beast Then silence filled the air between While the stars shone in the east The accursed stood before the fair She glowed beneath moon’s light Would she hear him without fear? She hadn’t cowered before his sight. "Maiden I beseech you" he growled, "to help end this curse upon me Tis many years since I have found Someone willing to set me free Come with me to Slarnia A place not unlike Hell I and a maiden fair must drink From the Seven Sisters well" The myth now spoke, it had a voice And it trembled in her veins A curse had been his weighted choice T’would not be her will to refrain Emerald eyes met red of beast A slight wink was in her eye "Slarnia sits off to the East, ‘tis best that we should fly." Amazed at her sudden trust He sighed as they were leaving Tenderly he clutched her waist In talons prone to cleaving He knelt before her as if a Knight Then upon his back she rode Through the darkness, in inky flight To the Seven Sister’s abode The wind tossed her golden locks Around his mighty nails They flew together towards the place Where darkness never pales The stench of dire came as they sailed Yet neither beast nor maid would retreat And trekked on through the dark, still air For a wicked curse they would defeat. The demons gathered ‘pon the shore Of the Seven Sisters well Water pure as seven virgins T'would break the cursed spell Landing upon a jagged rock He gently set maiden on her feet "I must drink from your hands The water of freedom, ever sweet." Deep the well from which he’d drink As the demons danced around No rope, nor bucket for her to reach The water far below this deviled ground The maiden leaned o’er the well To dip into waters of azure hue Seven voices she thus heard Calling ‘join us here! Please do!" Then maiden’s arms, in outstretched reach For the beast who bid her his work to do That she pull up straight from the well The waters of the Sisters magical brew. Seven Sisters drowned now dead Reached up their watery arms Clutching at the maiden there To woo her with their deathly charms The maiden splashed into the well The beast cried out in pain "Release the maiden, I beg of you and my soul you all will gain" The maiden floated to the shore Where beast bent o’er her frame Eerie laughter on the wind Proclaimed the Sisters game When myth meets myth, a collision of hearts For in her truth of one love the maid sought A beast who would ask, a maid not depart And beast held the maiden in his arms so taut From his red eyes and great grasping claws Tears fell forward, death’s prick drew blood red For he would give Hell a moment of pause If he could save her from this moment of dread. The maiden opened eyes of green And gazed upon the winged one No longer beast but gentle knight The Seven Sister’s curse was gone When myth meets myth, remember how true love feels. Hooked me early and I wasn't dissapointed. Damn fine story ladies. And the telling was a work of art in itself. I am impressed. |

This was a wonderful thing to do - working hand in glove with the deVine one. Thank you, Sharon - and thank you, Charisma, for throwing us into the pot together. It took a couple of days...and a flurry of e-mails, but even my granddaughter sat in on part of the process, giving it two when I read part of this to her. |
