He spreads cards on the table, and laughing, rakes in chips. I’d speak, if I were able, but instead I wet my lips with an unwilling tongue, and fold my losing hand. Once upon a time, when young, I thought I’d make a stand. I dreamed I’d hold the ace, I thought I’d take the pot; I never knew I’d face a time when dreams can rot. Listen to that rooster crow; I guess he won the bout. Another game? Thanks, but no, think I’ll sit this one out. Nan (Pilgrim variety) |
