Snowmobile Ride I hear the motor of the snowmobile humming in perfect precision as I walk and open the front door. My friend, his eyes of twinkling blue and a mischievous smile are hidden in bundles of warm colorful clothing. “Dress warm,” he says. “It’s cold outside. Here put this helmet on. We’ll take a run across the field. Then we’ll skim across the ice and go to the islands.” We slide onto the ice and watch friends and neighbors as they skate across the ice on snowmobiles and iceboats and small children on tiny handmade sleds laughing with delight. What an exciting adventure speeding across a snow filled lake of frozen mysteries. Racing with the icy wind, holding on tight, feeling the freezing temperatures penetrating through layers of warm clothing. Then suddenly we hear the sound. Ice cracking behind us. Running, running, faster, faster running for our lives. Flying, racing with the wind and running from the figure dressed in white with the frightening name of Death. I look behind to the right; an iceboat has fallen through the ice. I look ahead and before us someone with a ramp in tow is sliding every which way across the cracking ice. My friend yells above the roaring wind, “Hang on tight.” Flying through the air as if we had wings, landing hard, but still moving away from the deadly cracking ice. Up the hill we do ride, coming to a growling stop. We turn and look out upon the cracking ice that has reached the embankments edge. A sign of relief. As we stand and gaze upon this frozen scene, we cry for all that have lost their lives on the deadly cracking ice. Bonnie J. |

Oh, yes.....I know the feelings in this one! Excellent telling of true incidences that happen in the colder climates, far too often. I lived in Alaska for years, and have Eskimo friends that can acclaim to losing loved ones to the cracking ice. It is not a sound one easily forgets. Great write, and I appreciated the images. Accept these small gifts from my gypsy heart ~~S~~ [This message has been edited by Sunnyone (07-02-2003 03:41 AM).] |
