. I remember a study that came out a few years ago that estimated that a much as one third of American women had no libido. What then is libido? Nature versus nurture? Is it something you’re born with in the chromosomes or something you might pick up along the way? . |

If we evolved from the Animal Kingdom, then we naturally inherited "libido" from our wilder ancestors. But being more different and creative than they, we make many fancy additions to it  |

If Libido wasn't in our genes, we would have no purpose other then to simply exist...for with it, we procreate, which continues the species...without it, we would not be here...pretty simple, isn't it? "Watch & learn from the beasts of the field"? Yes? |

Huan Yi That’s a coincidence, I was reading an article on heart related problems the other day that said that 30% of the adult population of America weighed 20% more than they should. Ok so it’s not such an interesting coincidence until you look at the causes of lost sexual desire and find that hormonal imbalances caused by being under\overweight is high on the list along with stress, depression and the effects of medication. TomMark I believe the original survey was conducted in 1994 and concluded the following: “33 percent of women and 17 percent of men reported sexual disinterest.” (Sex in America: a definitive survey. Boston: Little, Brown, 1994.) Another survey went even further: “One third of women 18 to 59 years of age reported feeling a lack of sexual desire within the previous year” (The social organization of sexuality: sexual practices in the United States. Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 1994.) It seems that a third of American women may indeed have a low libido but on the positive side that means that two thirds have either a medium or a high sex drive, so it’s not all bad news. To suggest that one needs to be very interested in sex to have a libido is mistaken to begin with. If one's libido is not very sexually oriented, that is probably because it is more artistically or intellectually oriented; indeed, more civilized thro cultivation. |

LOL. Well, if Essorant and Lee are correct, that certainly helps explain the overwhelming stupidity of the human race. I'm just glad MY parents weren't so artistic or intellectual that they lost the drive to pass on their genes. Of course, associating art or intellect with libido kind of ignores the definition of libido, don't you think? I suspect it would be a real stretch to label the Mona Lisa or Quantum Mechanics as products of an "instinctual biological drive," and it's probably safe to say that "more civilized thro [sic] cultivation" correlates much closer to Freud's definition of sublimation than his definition of libido. quote: I wonder how many reported feeling a lack of hunger within that same year, Craig? You know, like maybe right after a big meal? Personally, I think I would be far more worried about the other two thirds. They clearly need to find someone who knows how to cook. |

Ron Not quite Ron. I already (in Post #2 ) gave you the broadness I was going by: lust. Lust is not native only to sexuality to begin with, so it is neither locked into a sexual definition, nor is it a "redirection" of sexuality. Look at the roots of the words libido and lust as well, and you will further see whence my usage comes. Modernism trying to lock libido into only sexual things, is similar to modernism trying to lock the word science "knowledge" to only carnal knowledge. |

I'm not sure of the relevance, Lee, but yes, I am an only child. I also have five sisters and two brothers. Essorant, I'm only interested in etymology insofar as it helps me better understand modern language. I do NOT use it as a replacement for modern language. While libido and lust are loosely related, they are definitely not the same things. |

Libido? It's a form of single/marital art combat isn't it? A combination of light contact Bartitsu, Jiu jitsu, and Judo? I know it helps promote several different hybrid forms. I've seen some go crazy with Libido. It's a scary thing when someone gets out of control with it. There are reports that Victoria's Secret may be one of the leading triggers of Hyper-Libido. I've seen many perform Tai chi, just to regain control of their Libido after exposure from the spring catalog collection. Thankfully, we have Moo Moos and it seems that if one doesn't take a bath for a few days it helps ward off those with Libido problems. |

I thinkand, Ron, in agreeing with Ess...not everyone has the same sexual drive...some people are more, you know, then others.... 5 sisters and two brothers???? sheesh...more like YOU?
