Now can anybody here tell me who they are? I'm not talking about descriptive words or what you do for a living, or your job/career. None of that is who you are. I'm talking about going deeper. REALLY, WHO ARE YOU?! Really think about it. Don't worry because I don't know who I am either. I don not want something like this: Hey I'm Bill from North Carolina, I'm 33 years old, and live with my wife and kids. I do not want nothing like that. Peace. Love. Forgiveness. |

Hello again. I'm having a mid-life crisis. (I hope it is a mid-life crisis, 'cause that means I will live until I am 92.) Because of this mid-life crisis, I'm having difficulty defining myself outside of my various designated roles. Good question though--and I have found that it is the "easy" questions which can be hardest to answer. "I don't know" works for me though. ALOT. |

I love that song. I once saw The Who in concert and Roger Daltrey jogged in place while singing a twenty minute rendition and never missed a note. http://youtube.com/watch?v=JgQqnzdVqJk A Welcome gift for you, Gifted and of course, Mz. D! (A shorter version--the guys are older--as am I, alas ) |

So nobody can tell me who they are? Finding out who I am is huge for me. I even wrote a poem about it. It's posted on the "Teen Poerty" forum. Peace. Love. Forgiveness. |

I think people spend far too much time defining themselves instead of enjoying who they are. I am me. I need no more than that... nor should anyone else. |

The only way I can find out who I am is to determine who I'm not. It's purely based on deductive reasoning. So I walk around pointing at people who are not me. Otherwise I might think I'm Reb and run around screaming for a tie. “Well all the apostles, they’re sittin’ on the swings, sayin’ I’d sell off my savior for a set of new rings.” |

Hey Reb - _I_ know I'm not you because I could never grow that cool moustache and beard... it would itch far too much. |

Huh? Hmmm. I saw a flock of chickens today, as I walked to the drug store, here in the suburbs of the Greater New Orleans Metro area. Yesterday, Louisiana was the last state in the union to ban cockfighting. Y'think there's a connection? And HEY--that made as much sense as everything else in this thread... *blink* Didn't it? |

I know. I am...beside myself. Perhaps, so Gifted doesn't think us horribly rude, someone could introduce her to the "I AM" poetry challenge. Seems like that might be a good idea about now. My humble apologies, Gifted. As Stephanos noted, we've all been a little tense lately and we apparently have a case of the sillies. *ahem* mea culpa |

Ron, Just wanted to tell you (this is as good a place as any) that my "Atlas Shrugged" came in today. You're going to have to give me a while on this one. It looks as thick as War and Peace. You definitely got the easier part of the deal. When I get done then we can post a thread titled "The abolition of 'Atlas Shrugged'", or perhaps "'The abolition of Man' Shrugged". Stephen. |

For Gifted, and everybody else except Christopher, who is rightfully enjoying himself-- <--huh? huh? *laughing* Here's the "I Am" poetry template: "I AM" I am (two special characteristics you have) I wonder (something you are actually curious about) I hear (an imaginary sound) I see (an imaginary sight) I want (an actual desire) I am (the first line of the poem repeated) I pretend (something you actually pretend to do) I feel (a feeling about something imaginary) I touch (an imaginary touch) I worry (something that really bothers you) I cry (something that makes you very sad) I am (the first line of the poem repeated) I understand (something you know is true) I say (something you believe in) I dream (something you actually dream about) I try (something you really make an effort about) I hope (something you actually hope for) I am (the first line of the poem repeated) * * * Due credit given to the originator of this Pip tradition in the Poetry Challenge thread, um, Alicat! *eg* |

The "I AM" poem again? I read my first and ONLY submission for that and have the horror of realizing I haven't progressed at all. That is who I am, Gifted. The same person I have always been, just missing a few organs now... (that was for Karen's entertainment, it's okay to snort). meh...good thing I am okay with who I am. Mayn, what did you guys turn this into? LOL. I leave for a couple seconds and this is what I come to find. DANG!! Well I know I am me, but then who is "me"? Eveybody wants to be themselves... well almost everybody, but how can you be yourself if you don't know who you are? You need to think deeper about this. Peace. Love. Forgiveness. |

Gifted "but how can you be yourself if you don't know who you are? You need to think deeper about this." I got you logic. 1. first to Know who I am...learn knowledge first. 2. then based on the knowledge about me so I can be myself. where shall I learn about myself? 1. from others....scary 2. from myself...how? who is "myself"? "myself" is who I am. but I can be who I am because I have no knowledge of myself based on your statement. not something like 1. first be myself...follow my own brain and my own senses and my own judgment. 2. then to learn who I am. (?) truth and knowledge truth comes before knowledge or knowledge comes before truth? |

Gifted? Another answer to the challenge (most of us have a written a few of these, but I still think it is a great way to find the answers to your question.) So I offer you a new one from me, and I do hope to read yours soon. /pip/Forum103/HTML/003737.html I sincerely hope we didn't scare you off--we don't generally "haze" new members, but you took it so well, so...thank you! |

Gifted, Just to acknowledge the point, your question is not an easy one to answer. And most of us have struggled our way through and grown into the answer(a long time ago). But to go as "deep" as you have suggested is not always a public forum answer. And secondly for some of us it could require a lot of space to answer. I'm available for emails on the subject in the event you are serious. In the mean time you just as well lay claim to a really rockin' fun thread. Peace... If tears could build a stairway and memories a lane, I'd walk right up to heaven and bring you home again. |

I'm glad I made a fun thread. Now, you said that some of you grew into your answers, but some people pass away, and don't even get to find out who they were. However, I know finding out who I am is a journey I must complete on my own. Peace. Love. Forgiveness. |

quote: What exactly do you mean? There are certain things that define us but we don't need them to know who we are. Yes, Van Gogh was a painter; but take away his paint brush and he was still Van Gogh. It's all about the inner life, the life of the mind, not your occupation or your style or your name or any of that stuff. And if you're completely confused by your inner life as we all have been at one point or another, then introduce you to yourself. Seriously. Get a piece of paper and pencil and write down all your beliefs. Do I believe in Santa Claus? Do I believe in God? Do I like the color red? Can I spell antidisestablishmentarianism? Do I know the long-term effects of silicone dust on the lungs? Am I conservative or liberal? Republican, Democrat or nonpartisan? What's my favorite subject in school? What's my favorite pastime? Where do I want to go in life? Where don't I want to go in life? What do I want or don't want? Need and don't need? Why do I wear red socks instead of white socks? Who am I? After you've pondered all your questions, you'll probably end up with an answer like Chris's: "I am me." Or you could just think about it the way I do: I figure I'm probably not the type of person I want to hang out with, so I don't bother knowing myself. “Well all the apostles, they’re sittin’ on the swings, sayin’ I’d sell off my savior for a set of new rings.” |
