Why is my thread closed? I received no email either. There is no reason for my thread to be closed like that. |

I wasn't sure why it was closed. But when I read it, I thought to myself "is there any purpose to this thread?". It could have been to show that no one can really know anything and that all answers are pointless. But if you're going to believe that then why post in forum which presupposes answers? Of course I'm assuming that you were making a philosophical statement ... you might have just been playing around. You've been known to do that.  And there's always the possibility I've misunderstood the post completely. Stephen |

I was asking what people's most important questions are in life in their own minds. Which questions intrigue people the most. quote: Because I said that the answers are futile? . The simple fact is you, as all of us in the West, are comfortably immersed in a social isolation and insulation from harsh realities that gives value to mere word play. For all the difference between you and another your own age in Iraq you might as well be on different planets. The truth is that Western Civilization affords its citizens a long childhood. We all suffer from it which makes the ultimate questions all that much more difficult to face much less answer. All major religions have dealt with the ultimate questions of the meaning of life and the fact of death; so have philosophies. We are here, and yet only briefly, those facts have posed the questions. That you should disparage the millenniums of efforts at answers however flawed is hardly to your credit. . |

First, Edward, you were sent an email. It's your responsibility to keep your email address current and to make sure Forum missives aren't sent to a spam filter. In this case, I didn't expect a response from you. Many times, however, I will and when I don't get one the standard procedure is to suspend your posting privileges. That usually elicits a quick answer. You can avoid that potential embarrassment by making certain our email can get through to you. A working email address is and always has been a requirement for Membership. Second, the thread was closed and left in place because others had already responded and I didn't feel like emailing everyone to let them know where to follow through on the thread. If you look at the closed thread, it specifically says "Transferred to pipTalk Lounge" right at the very top. Finally, and for the record, I moved the thread because this forum at least pretends to be a bit more on the serious side. You can protest all you like, but with questions like "Where do babies come from?" and "Why can't you answer this question?" only a naïve idiot is going to believe those are the "most important questions" in your life. Maybe we need a forum set aside for aspiring standup comedians, but it ain't going to be this one. I sincerely hope that answers all your questions? |

There's nothing wrong with humor, Ed. Like everything else, however, there's a time and place. If you go to church, a funeral, or even just to school with the ONLY intention of being funny, you'll likely find yourself soon unwelcome. When other people take something moderately seriously your attempt at humor can sound an awful lot like ridicule. There was nothing inherently wrong with your thread. It was just posted in the wrong forum. We have plenty of playgrounds here for those who want to play. |
