I just wanted to say that there are many people who are healthy and wealthy who are not "happy".  I think it's more than that.

I would have to say that happiness is defiantely a by-product of the events and direction of one's life.
As for the health and wealth statement, I would have to totally disagree. Many years ago, I was so severely broke that I had to allow Gov. Casey from Pa to support my family by placing them on "the system". I was nowhere near being wealthy, and was killing myself to get off welfare, yet I was the happiest I had ever been in my entire life: I had a wife that I loved immensely, two kids that I truly and totally adored.
I was also dealing with hypoglycemia, knee challenges, back issues, and a neck injury, so the health wasn't even in my favor.

I would have to say that in order for one to be happy, one must be content with the direction their life is heading, and with where they are spiritually and emotionally in their life.

You may burn my flag... only after you wrap yourself in it first.

I didn't just mean selfhealth and physical health.  The healthiness of others gives happiness to others.  And health may be more than just physical.  There is spiritual, mental, and emotional, health as well.

Essorant~~~that is something I have been thinking about lately...If happiness is a by product, and comes from good health and welfare, how do we achieve it mentally emotionally and physically all at once?

I didn't mean "more" in the sense of being discontent, or having greed, or amassing more things.  I meant that there has to be another element besides physical things alone.  I almost could have said "I think it's less than that", and still remained true to the idea I was trying to express.

Now you're talkin'.  I would also add that "wealth" may also be spiritual as well as physical.  "Lay up for yourselves treasure in Heaven" is good advice, seeing that rich people have not secured happiness by their riches alone.

We need to do what begets, and also, as Stephanos says "secures" health and wealth.  Instead of being in a rush and trying to hasten or force the garden to grow, we need to water it carefully and watch and learn which manners help it grow hardy and hearty, and protect it from harm as much as we can.  When we are patient, learn, and sustain morals and manners most conductive and protective to healthy growth, then the garden stands with comfort, confidence and stable strength, and then it also bears forth rich and rewarding fruits as well.

I would also add that "wealth" may also be spiritual as well as physical.

Thou sayest sooth, Stephanos.

Angel

To me:

Happiness is letting your mind run naked through a field of camera lenses and unsoggy cereal. That might seem a tad strange for others.

Happiness is being able to be happy without a product. That's how I see it.

And I said to the devil, "You better leave my spleen alone."

To be laid out in the open in the complete absence of fear I heard that is perfection... not so sure if it is happiness though...

Is it possible to be unhappy when things are perfect?

As Joaseph Benthem of the church of England said:

"Happiness occurs as a by product for the satisfaction of desires for things other than happiness itself."

So, in otherwords, he meant that if you aim at happiness directly, you will not be able to find it. While on the other hand, if you have your goals elsewhere you are more likely to achieve it. But, like I said on my other post, what really defines happiness?

totally agree adding, wealth of spirit, as to me, there is no amount of money that can by happiness, which I believe is a state of mind...you are who you believe  yourself to be.

great thread...thank you

I would say that true happiness is only found in wholeness - and wholeness is only found when we realize that we aren't an island to ourselves - that in giving we have all and in keeping nothing for ourselves we own everything. Happiness is the fulfillment that   comes from being in harmony with ourselves, with God, and, as much as depends on us, our fellow man. Really, I would choose to speak of it as joy rather than happiness, because true joy cannot be shaken by what happens to us, while happiness may come and go. Joy is the thing that only we can steal from ourselves. And I think one of the fastest ways to steal it from ourselves is to seek our own happiness as an end in itself. He who seeks to gain his life shall lose it, and he who seeks to lose his life shall gain it.
