“ The wise man is like the autumn deer crying in the mountains;
the fool is like the moth which flies into the candle”

Gempi Seisuiki, chap. viii

And where is the chance for happiness?

“Vale of tears.”

“Life’s a  . . .”

How much is the perception of realities, life,
determined by idiom?

Idiom? Or very tired, denigrating cliché?

As much as comfort may be determined by keeping some sameness at your home; the bathroom always being in the same place; a familiar chair always there for you to sit in at night reading, watching TV, talking on the phone etc.  A familiar ornament that is come down from your ancestors that is there every day.   Language is similar for speakers.  Speakers must preserve, and to some extent can't have a language that works well unless they feel "at home" in such a way for strong familiarity.  And the things that are shared and similar and consistant, are what make that feeling.

There's more than one.

Judaism and Christianity.

Genesis 1:31 "And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day."

"There's more than one."

Stephenos

Shouldn't that be: there are more than one?

Actually, Ess, the statement

"There's (is) more than one" more aptly describes my spiritual leaning.

(sorry for the interruption, folks--proceed)

Ess,

Would this sentence be correct?

"There is more than one religion."

If so, then what I said is also correct.
But, I'm not a grammatician, I could be wrong.

PS.  Aren't these new colors refreshing or does my computer have a virus?

Stephenos

I believe the form of the verb to be is relevant and should agree with only what is/are being referred to as "more than".  In this case two religions are being referred to as more than one, and therefore the plural are should be used.  Two religions are more than one;  not two religions is more than one.

By the words "one religion" in your sentence though, the is is still there, but implied:

There is more than one religion (is)

When you use the different (and correct) form are, it is still implied:

There are more than one religion (is)
(There (christianity and judaism) are more than one religion (is).)

Such as in saying: you are stronger than I (am)

Since that meaning of being is mentioned once, it does not need to be mentioned a second time, and therefore am may or may not be mentioned;  but the grammatical form of the verb to be is bound to the subject it refers to: in the first half to you and therefore should be are in the second half to I and therefore should be am, or implied (am)
